Been meaning to read this for awhile. Currently sitting outside Beijing Railway Station, chain smoking, and watching young security officers pass by.

I've got a 12 hour train ride to Mongolia that leaves at 2:14am (it's 8pm right now).

Was going to fly, but you only get one shot to slowly push your way into Genghis Khan's turf. Sure as fuck flying on the way back...

One of my partners thinks I'm retarded for doing this. “You're wasting your time. There's nothing there. You know it's colder than Canada, right?”

I have no clue why I torture myself like this... Oh, yes I do...

 

I would definitely be eager as well to head into Mongolia if I was in northern China for awhile! Sure, it takes awhile to get anywhere there but that's no reason not to go! You're going to the capital?

 

you can get in some good star gazing there. I remember seeing a map of light pollution once and Mongolia was just a big black hole.

I would spend up to 5 days in a yurt.

 

Yeah. I'll arrive in Baotou (Inner Mongolia, still technically China) first, then hop on a train to Ulaanbaatar (the capital) for another few hours.

Smoking is not only permitted, but I sense somewhat encouraged (to kill time) on this train.

The largest US Flag ever sewn, it measures 505 feet by 225 feet and weighs 3,000 pounds. It takes 500 people to unfurl. Each star is 17 feet high.

 

I think that's kind of neat. It's big! I usually don't feel this good about flags, but this one I like. Ever since 9/11 I've had an uneasy feeling about the meaning people attach to bearing the flag... But this is exceptional.

 

Sitting in an empty waiting hall on the first floor. Every waiting hall on the second floor is in a state of chaos, so I'm fine down here. Wifi and HF... Can't go wrong.

 

They turned the lights off seconds after me posting that picture... Just gonna sit here until I'm kicked out (if it happens).

A security guard walked by and didn't say anything... maybe it's ok.

EDIT: It wasn't OK... On the second floor now.
