    Finally Found It!

I have been searching online for years trying to find a pic of the ship that burned in the river at New Orleans in 1969 when I was working as a Harbor Police Patrolman. I have been writing an autobiografy about my work history and this was one of the memorable nights on the beat.

You would think such a pic would be out on the Web, but it was only this grainy one that I found when someone wrote the history of the ship itself. Seems it started out as the SS Andria before it was sold to Taiwan and became the SS Union Faith. I include the pic of the Andria so you can see that it was a sizeable ship that I watched burn and sink that Easter night.

Anyhow, for those who were not there, here is my take on that fateful night in New Orleans:

Fire on the River - April 6, 1969

The most memorable night working was Easter Sunday, April 6, 1969. It was a very quiet, uneventful night and I found a car parked next to a fire hydrant at the Toulouse street wharf but didn't bother writing a ticket since that wharf was empty, and just a shell of a tin building. Then about 7:15 p.m. a Taiwanese freighter, the SS Union Faith traveling up the river hit a fuel barge being towed by the M/V Warren J. Doucet going downriver and there was an explosion and fire on the water with 419K gallons of spilled fuel. It happened under the Greater New Orleans Bridge and the flames shut down the bridge for a while as they inspected for damage. The barge kept drifting downstream and was threatening a wharf at the river bend which would have been a major waterfront fire. The barge broke up and sank before hitting anything and the fire boats and fire hoses on the Toulouse Street wharf kept the flames on the water away from the wharves and fortunately the Fire Dept was able to hook to the hydrant despite the illegally parked car. Our Captain and several police officers out in the patrol boat nearly got caught in the fire when their engine failed and either the coast guard or our fire tug rescued them. There were several fire tugs hosing the ship which was totally afire drifting in the river and finally sank at 2 a.m. April 7. During this chaos I had to do crowd control on Eads Plaza which was out of control for one patrolman as the whole city within walking distance was out there watching the fiery tragedy in the river.

We actually saw a ship sink in the Mississippi River and I think it stayed in the silt and was never raised. The river is quite deep in New Orleans. Twenty five sailors on the ship died that night.

Intriguing Shale, thanks for sharing! I always dig such (seemingly trivial) snippets of the past. They often do live on in a city's collective memory.

This is an old photo from the 80's I came across. It's a muti-exposure that happened by accident using an old Kodak Instamatic. I'm the handsome guy, and the little girl who appears several times is my daughter. The watery background is the weir at Shrewsbury.

And since I'm posting my old pics, here's the only one I still have of my ex-wife. She's the one on the left BTW.

I'm taking a cruise to Hawaii in November and just started the artwork on my other Anchor Tat.

Didn't have a drawing of the Atlantic Anchor so used tracing paper to copy it off my foot. Got a final use of the tracing paper by using it for a mockup.
