while Id be the first to defend pink floyd.. Ill be the first to say its layered stupio sound .. note "studio" (dylexia).. it takes hours and hours, days and days to developed to tonal quality used by this band. While they are a predominantly live band , they are ever more so predominate in the studio. Bringing a 1/3 the studio to LIVE music like you see with The Wall production. Its practically impossible to do this note for note in a live setting with no errors. Take a Live concert and place it over another live concert and see if you can tell. Its been recorded in a stupio and synced to Live sound. Pink Floyd would be just as fake as Beyonce... /btw all I do is play guitar, and could play anything David Gilmour can. Given the right instrument and gear its really childs play..
My problems with Grateful Dead and Phish are.. that they go way too far into jamming sometimes. Up and down the pentatonic scale, up and down, change to a major scale, back to a pentatonic scale.. I just can't dig the jams that don't go anywhere. That's not to say I don't like them at all, but I would say I prefer The Grateful Dead over Phish, and they both do have some catchy melodies. I rarely hear SCI go into long, extended jams without melody, though, and that's why I think they are my favourite jam band.
and thats another thing. im just not impressed by anything except the sheer number of fans they have. all they seem to do is play like amateurs and add a bunch of weird crap in studio. Jimmy Page david gilmour is not, and nor is he or barret even close to robert plant. zeppelin is impressive (not always) floyd just isnt
I respect them for the time it took to layer the sound. but its rather easy with million dollar studios..
placebo i was obsessed with them from like 7th-9th grade. they were my first concert, and i walked away with a setlist and a pick (that stefan was legit using, not just the ones they throw out at the end). it was a really magical night
ah. shit. i have to crucify you. Its okay that you don't like the Grateful Dead, but when you like deadsy and can't appreciate floyd, your musican taste is entirely broken. Just kidding, sort of. I'm a bit of a music snob. I do love the Decemberists and Joanna Newsom, so your taste isn't completely broken I have to defend two of my favorite bands now. I love the Grateful Dead because they are a great history of Americana music. I dont think a lot of people realize that a lot of their songs are not originals, they are old american folk songs that the Grateful Dead rearranged. Listening to their catalog is like taking a musical history class. Plus they are the first band to create an entire culture around their music and live shows, and there is something to be said for that. Pink Floyd is amazing because they have a completely unique sound and instead of playing rhythm guitar or lame leads designed to show off his skill, David Gilmour writes intense melodies on guitar, and its fuckin' beautiful. That is all.
lmao i have at least 3 friends that eat drink and breath GD ive a lot of the trivia. and ill definitely give em credit for having an entire cultural movement built around them, and the wall of sound is pretty impressive too. im not saying either band doesnt have merit, and im well aware that like every musician ive listed were directely influenced by them. and as a lyrisist i can say that syd was a pretty awesome writer. but i find em a bit boring. and as a second confession i once watched the wall all day every day for like 2 weeks straight and it started a small dip into insanity for me (i seriously got a bunch of twitches and nervous tics). and as for deadsy... well they are a very love/hate band, either ppl really dig em or think they are hacks. i think that cher and mr. allman made a good musician.
im a lyricist and vocalist so depending on who you are, yes i consider myself a musician. and i know that im next to worthless without a band behind me
Well, if there's going to be any crucifixion, I think you'll be on the list after me, because to be completely honest with you, I've never even heard a Grateful Dead song. And they sell Dead t-shirts at the dollar store...it kind of kills it for me.
