(Thanks) Not on the scale we're talking about. every flood story depicts the flood as an extintion level event followed by what you could call a second creation story. Early man also had to deal with earthquakes, volcanos, etc., yet we don't find any cataclism myths revolving around any of theese themes. It makes sense too; if we set these stories around the end of the last ice age, which is reasonable, we could attibute the flood, or floods, to a sudden increase in global temp that would cause the glaciers to become unstable. Glaciers don't just melt on the outside they melt from the inside out too which can cause them to collapse-- or even explode-- all at once, realeasing volumes of water equivelent to small seas (still happens today. Happened on a smaller scale in Iceland 10 years ago). The fact that most early human settlements were coastal you could couple the glacial tidal waves (the one that happened in the Mousulla valley in montana is supposed to have been 1/2 a mile high) with the rising sea level and the dramatic increase in rain due to warmer temperatures and a sudden availablility of water in the atmosphere and you've got all the makings of a great flood myth.
Yeah, but huge floods happen relatively often. If such stories had been around since before we left Africa (when human numbers, at one point, fell to extremely low numbers, perhaps in the dozens) then it could have just been a hundred year flood or one of your ice age deals, that would have been perpetuated for ever on (since humans always stayed near rivers/water, floods would have always been with us). You could be right as far as your ice dam explosions go...but if you're talking about a literal worldwide flood happening, well, I'll have to disagree. It's simply not possible.
No, but if the climatatic conditions precipatating cataclismic flooding were worldwide, as in the case of a sudden rise in tempurature following (or even during) an ice age, and they caused a series of "Great floods" in different parts of the world within roughly the same timeframe it could be considerred a single event. It's not really neccesary for what we're talking about though. the point is even if it could be proven that there were a "Great Flood", or even a localised "great flood" in the area the bible deals with about the time the bible says it occured (thanks BlackguardXIII) it wouldn't nessesarily establish christianity (or any of the Judeo-christian belief systems) as the "one true religion" since most cultures have a similar myth.
^I can't find anything there to disagree with. Personally, besides finding it somewhat interesting, I don't think it's very important. Doesn't really affect my life, you know?
I find it really interesting that our resident "prophets" have't given us much presence in this thread. I guess the Hopi tribe scared them off
Seems like it. Fascinating though. Anyone have any more information on prophecies? And... The next question is.. Can truth be objective? Is there an objective truth?
"A Guatemalan anthropologist and student of Mayan history and calendars, Carlos Barrios, has a similar interpretation. It is true that the Long Count calendar ends in December of 2012, but the world will not. According to Mr. Barrios, the end of the calendar signals a transformation of some sort, but not the end of the world. Barrios does not deny that the Mayans were prophets, however. According to him, their calendars predicted the coming of Cortez in 1519. The Mayan Calendars comprehension of time, seasons, and cycles has proven itself to be vast and sophisticated. The Maya understand 17 different calendars, some of them charting time accurately over a span of more than ten million years. The calendar that has steadily drawn global attention since 1987 is called the Tzolk'in or Cholq'ij. Devised ages ago and based on the cycle of the Pleiades, it is still held as sacred. With the indigenous calendars, native people have kept track of important turning points in history. For example, the daykeepers who study the calendars identified an important day in the year One Reed, Ce Acatal, as it was called by the Mexicans. That was the day when an important ancestor was prophesied to return, "coming like a butterfly." In the western calendar, the One Reed date correlates to Easter Sunday, April 21, 1519 the day that Hernando Cortez and his fleet of 11 Spanish galleons arrived from the East at what is today called Vera Cruz, Mexico. When the Spanish ships came toward shore, native people were waiting and watching to see how it would go. The billowing sails of the ships did indeed remind the scouts of butterflies skimming the ocean surface. " http://skepdic.com/maya.html
Here's some sites describing fulfilled prophecies of Joseph Smith (for any mormon fans out there!): http://www.jefflindsay.com/LDSFAQ/FQ_prophecies.shtml http://www.fairlds.org/pubs/tagm/tagm36.html
What I was trying to say with the worm story is that there may be an objective reality, but if there is it's beyond our comprhension. For the most part all we have to go on is the limited bits of information we get through our senses, edited by our prejudices, fears, thoughts, desires, etc (bullshit). If there is an objective reality we can never fully know (see) it witout merging with it, but we can experience (feel) it's power, and the more we do the more objective we can be about our own reality.
Blackguard, could please tell me what book you got this from, and chapter and verse? Also could you tell me what year it came into print? And could you tell me what will be the end of all this, and the point of the Prophecy? And if there is Great distruction here, are we talking nukes? And how do the Hopi people or others escape the coming destruction?
Sera, not sure if you are speaking about me, but I am still waiting for an answer from Blackguard about his prophecies. Such as where was it written down and when? The destruction that is coming is it nukes? What can we do to escape it? And what was the purpose of the prophecy? Sera, you should know by now, I don't run from anyone.
she posted that question before you posted your question to blackguard. So it's odd that you've had nothing else to say about this thread, since prophecy is your big thing.
You are free to study the Hopi tribe for any information relating to them. The internet is a wonderful resource. http://www.hopi.nsn.us/ http://www.welcomehome.org/rainbow/prophecy/prophecies.html http://www.crystalinks.com/hopi2.html http://www.thehopiway.com/content/prophecies/past.htm
Please excuse my interjection, but campbell34, given your statement What can we do to escape it? it seems to me you've got both something to fear and something to run a way from. IMHO I have faith enough to trust that death is as natural as birth.
Well it's not odd at all, because it was the first time I had a chance to see the topic of this thread.
I find these prophecies interesting, because some of them mirror what I have stated the Bible prophecies have been saying about America. If you recall, I have stated that America will be destroyed by a nuclear attack. That's what the Hopi prophecies have stated as well. Yet the prophecies that I based that on were written 2,000 years before America was a nation. Also the Bible states that no one will ever be able to live in this land again, where as the Hopi prophecies state that there people will live in the land. I believe this would be wishful thinking. If there is a full attack as the Bible states there will be. No one will be able to live here because of the excessive radation. The Bible goes one step further and states that no one will even return to the land to remove a stone for a foundation, because the land will be fully polluted. I believe the Hopi prophecies are valid, yet I donot believe they are fully accurate. What I also find of interest is the prophecies mention that the war will begin over the people the light was first revealed to. And I believe their error is when they speak of Africa and China ect. For the Bible states the War will be fought over the fate of Jerusalem. And the one's who control Jerusalem today are the Jews. Also, it was the Jews who were orginally the chosen people of God, and who first received the Ten Commandments. Also Americas involvement with Israel will surley draw us into the conflict. I believe the Hopi prophecies do speak truth, but do so lacking the 100% accuracy mark, which is the Biblical requirement. And as a side note, you might consider this week the President of Iran stated that Israel should be wiped off the face of the earth. Iran, which is spoken of in Scripture as Persia, is one of the nations the Bible states that at the time of the end will invade Israel.
As with the name of Jesus Christ, the Old Testament does not give names, but descriptions of persons or places. Jesus was described in over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament, and that is why a billion people call Him God today. America is described in the same way, in Jermiah 50, and 51. Also in Revelation 18. I am not threatening America, I love this country, and back in 1969 I enlisted in the Navy. I donot want to see any of this come to America, but the prophecies will play out, and there is nothing I can do to stop them.
If some prophet in the OT had named the messiah, and actually said "His name will be Jesus Christ", every single hebrew woman would name their child "Jesus Christ"
