That is not the sole reason, but I do believe that it is part of it.

Not only that of course but a candidate who wears tshirts & jeans only, or a candidate with dreads, wouldn't stand a chance... maybe some day, I hope -but not today.

the purpose of protesting is for the people to resist the power. you're not resisting if you're compromising what you wear because you're afraid of what people will think. also food for thought people who dress weird attract people's attention through bright colours and fancy hair. then these people might stop and think "what the fuck are these guys on about". people should be drawn into protest by the information they receive about a situation and their personal response to it... they should receive biased information but they definately shouldnt be tricked into believing "alternative" people because theyre wearing different clothes. resist the need to conform into whats seen as normal and then "normal" people will appreciate the beauty of this and understand what we're saying.

and hey the australian prime minister, elected simply because he has cool eyebrows which contain the entity of his brain cells and is short and bald and wears funny glasses, is in his 3rd term... making him the 2nd longest serving PM ever... so in politics theres no substitute for funny looks... why not have a leader with dreads?

ohhh such comments... I hope I get al the ones I want to reflect upon.
as for image and the suit:
Kerry and Kucinich had nice suits, too.
The reason the Rs won so much was "framing the message." they had something to say, they streamlined it and repeated it consistantly. Kerry didn't grab that bronze ring, to our detriment, perhaps.
    I liked these comments:

newo They tried it back in 1968, when college students went "clean for Gene" (Eugene McCarthy) and his candidacy for the Democratic Presidential nomination. http://www.ncs.pvt.k12.va.us/ryerbury/wes/wes.htm It had some success, getting LBJ to decide not to run for re-election, but ended in defeat and riots at the DNC in Chicago.

I say be yourself. Rallies I've been to have had a lot of diversity of people of all ages and appearances, and I don't see how anyone could say they're just a bunch of "naive young hippies".
element7 The whole image thing works all different ways. I've met plenty of folk who were dressed in tye dye, patch pants, all the regalia, that were just as close minded as the people they claimed to oppose. The snooty hippy variety of hippy. Same thing on the coin flip, when I had dreads, all the stares and comments were plentiful. I just wish humanity could get over this infatuation with how people look. Learn to see with our heart, not just our eyes.

yep, hippier than thou sucks, so does more into protesting than thou, which i saw a boat load of yeaterday (I made my local Fox affiliate, hehe)
I also saw Wiccan Fundies being hateful to every other faith out there.
    Bad move.
As for Clean for Gene, I was thinking of that Friday morning and wondering if a similar campaign could work again/yet. I'm inclined to think no, because the counter-to-the-culture is spread too thin for organization and for the Other Side to set its cross hairs on. upset about metal heads or gutter punks, metrosexuals or dreadies? too many choices.
the line that whirled through my head was cropped for Kucinich.
The concept revisited at the rally Saturday: I'll cut my hair when the war is over. Since I'm female, I'd have to dread to get the conservative ire worked up.
