there's some theory about animals who are killed in slaughterhouses secreting high levels of hormones when they're about to be slaughtered.. the sympathetic nervous system kicks in and they go into fight-or-flight mode... cortisol is one of the hormones, and it attaches to proteins, like meat. so there are theories that when one eats meat, they ingest all these extra bad hormones and they can make the eater more aggressive in turn. it's just a theory i've heard about, i read a few articles that back it up... but maybe it would be something to look into for your project? it might help with the proof... you could expand your survey to make sure that the non-violence and health are truly connected with vegetarianism, and not other factors. AGE would be a big issue... kids are going to get into more fist fights than gereatrics. likewise, age can effect health. also, there's probably a pretty big bell curve where a certain age range has a greater amount of vegetarians. many try it, and some don't stick with it.. thus there aren't as many older vegetarians, and this group would be the best to look into in regards to health. then you can really look at the long term effects. if you've only been veg for a few months or a year, your body might not have had enough time to get to that prime, veggie health level. gender is important, too. whether or not one smokes might have a greater impact on health than vegetarianism, so you might want to ask if they smoke, too. and what about doctor/hospital visits due to a broken bone or accident? don't forget to factor those out... i'm sorry if this sounds really critical, it isn't meant to be. it just seems that if you make the survey really vague, you won't get any proof from it. i promise, i'm trying to be helpful, not rude (it's hard to tell on the online sometimes).
veggie? Yes Vegan? No Doctor visits: 1, before being vegetarian fist fights: does sparring count? (sorry, German. )
Vegetarian? Yes Vegan? No # of Fist Fights Involved in in Past Two Years: 0 # of Non-Routine Doctor/Hospital Visits in Past Two Years: 1 The doctor visit wasn't really health related...I got an acid burn on my lips (i;m sensitive to the acid in onions and tomatoes and I guess I OD ) and I put the wrong stuff on it and it irritated it....so it didn't really have anything to do with my health.
yes to being vegetarian no to being vegan no fist fights (generally i oppose violence) one trip to emergency room and have to make doctor's appointment to follow up, but its for female organ stuff that i genetically inherited from my mother's line my reasons for becoming vegetarian were health reasons. i suffered from severe, debilitating GERD. for prolly the first time in years i tried the conventional medicine route... i didn't do so well. i started researching ways to naturally deal with the disease and eventually decided to try vegetarianism for 30 days to see if it would help. after two weeks i felt better than i had since before i got sick. almost 3 years later i still don't eat meat and was able to gradually add things like alcohol, spicy foods, citrus, acidy foods, and so on back in my diet. i can even occassionally have small amounts of caffeine without being in horrible pain. vegetarianism gave me my life and health back.
Vegetarian? Yes/No: no. Vegan? Yes/No (if so, put "no" to vegetarian): yes. # of Fist Fights Involved in in Past Two Years: 0 # of Non-Routine Doctor/Hospital Visits in Past Two Years: 2
Hello from and omnivore who has had 0 fist fights and 0 non-routine doctor visits in the last two years. If this paper is for a statistics class, then the object of the paper is to get practice doing the right calculations. If it were for a social science class, then you would realy have to worry about sampling methods etc. before giving any creedance to your conclusions.
It's just for a sophomore algebra 3-4 class, really. I could just as well make the information up and just do the various graphs. I did realize this questioning system is very... crappy, for lack of better word, because some people haven't been vegetarian for two years, or have different ideas of what "non-routine" means, and so far my information has been very inconclusive. So, I do respect your concerns on the pointlessness of this project, but thanks for responding anyways and keep it going!
Vegetarian yes Vegan yes fistfights of course not! non-regular doctor visits - I don't know what you mean by this. What is a "regular" doctors visit? But yes, I've visited a dr's in the last 2 years.
