haha... I'm FINALLY getting some of my friends into jam bands... and it kicks ass because people actually know what the heck I'm talking about. :D My friend, the cheese aka cheeto dan, went and saw Keller a few times this Summer and indulged on way too much LSD and shrooms, so now he's all like "HAEWHBWQERHEWQIHFQEWIHFH... Keller" and has a stroke everytime you drop a K-Dub reference or something. :D It's fun to play with some of the greenhorn freaks...

Now maybe if I tell you that you will hate Widespread Panic's "Space Wrangler" CD then you will actually go listen to it. Hm.

Widespread Panic is alright... but they're just so.. I don't know.

They lack alot of meat that other bands have had in the past.

moe. and SCI (listening to SCI's mid-nineties stuff and their stuff now and comparing them would be like listening to Incubus' early nineties stuff and A Crow Left of the Murder or something and comparing them)

    moe. is just.. moe.

Though I wish Chuck Garvey's slide playing wasn't so tinnish and squirrely.

I listen to Phish both sober and not...same goes with most jam bands. It's good music, I don't have to be stoned to enjoy it.

Same. I still love it sober because it's just good, happy music.
I would have to agree about Widespread Panic, I can't really say I'm hooked on them or anything. I have a lot of their stuff but it's nothing I really enjoy.

there are not enough words in the human lexicon to describe my ultimate distaste for Widespread.....I have heard so much of their shit, and, (shamefully, I admit) went to one of their shows. All of my friends at one point in time worshipped Panic- their music does absolutely nothing for me. I guess Im not hearing it correctly??

It was a joke. You don't have to defend the band.

seems like most people have never listened to, or even heard of the disco biscuits.

personally, i was a huge phish fan, then moved on to umpherys when phish broke up. umphreys lead me to the disco biscuits, but i just disregarded them....
i then came into some money and picked up a bunch of Cd's. one of which happened to be "the wind at four to fly" by the disco biscuits.... but i still put it to the side and never listened to it, cuz i wasn't hearing much about them, and figured there was nothing to hear. i played through all my other Cd's till i was throughly full of them. the only on i had left was "the wind at four to fly" by the disco biscuits. i decided to give it a try... and i was blown away by disc 1! it left me drooling for more. i then picked up "senior boombox" and "uncivilized area" by the disco biscuits and my love for bisco grew. i then attended a small bisco show in Philly, and danced the night away, i could feel the music, the jamming, the whole scene, and it was amazing. a few days later i went to the bisco new years eve show, and i left a hardcore bisco fan! i now like bisco more than i like umphreys, though i still like UM.
i cant wait to get to another bisco show!

if ya haven heard them, go out and get a disco biscuits CD("not they missed the perfume"), and give them the shot that they deserve.

mind blowing guitar, smooth baselines, pounding drums, creative keyboarding, and original lyrics... what more could you want?

if ya want a list of songs to check out ill post em.

thanks for reading my bisco sales pitch!

Yes, I have...plenty of times. But not from any "jam band" that you speak of. But then again I don't know what a jam band is. I know that phish, the dead, and so on and so forth are jam bands, and I like a few songs from each. But for the most part I get bored.

What classifies a band as a jam band really? Because every band that I listen to jams. And I jam when I listen to it. Is it freestyling that makes them a jam band? Well no, because a lot of the bands freestyle that I listen to, and according to the "jam crowd" they wouldn't fit in. Tell me what a jam band is and I'll look into it.

Ain't no rules, ain't no vow, we can do it anyhow:
    I'n'I will see you through,
'Cos everyday we pay the price with a little sacrifice,
Jammin' till the jam is through.

    We're jammin' -
    To think that jammin' was a thing of the past;
    We're jammin',
And I hope this jam is gonna last.

OAR has nothing to do w/ jam bands. Never has and never will. I've listened to them a few times...and IMO they suck.

A jam band may average about 8 minutes a song. A non-jam band usually is in the 3-5 minute range. Length of the songs is not the deciding factor. If you truely want to know what a jam band is and part of how it all got started, or at least how it got named, go to yearsinyourears.com and purchase a DVD. I think $20 is a fair price to pay for what could be a gateway into a new appreciation for music.
What makes up a jam band is the build up and subsequent release of energy through music. The Dead were the 1st jam band though they were not referred to as such until at least the early 90's (again if you want the true history visit yearsinyour ears.com). The muscians often improvise, but it's not a requirement of a jam band. The only true requirement is that build up and release of energy. That one moment (or more hopefully) that everything comes together, the music and the audience, whipped into a frenzy and spurred on by each other, the music becomes secondary to the moment or at least the moment supercededes the music. It is that time when hairs stand up on your arm and the back of your neck and they do the same for the muscians on stage, until finally the RELEASE. Time has just folded in on itself. Are you in the fold or not?

I would like to think I am in the fold, at least with anything that has to do with music, but I still don't understand. I've been to a few music festivals that were.......from what I was told a jam band heaven. Out of all the bands that I watched, nothing really built up any more than any other song that anyone would listen to. Yeah they were fuckin rockin musicians, but it was just an improvised jam session. Harldy any lyrics, and it was all 'freestyled'. The only think to my ears that would seperate them form Zeppelin, or dozens of other "not a jam band" bands would be that it is heavy on the jazz side.

I'm pretty sure OAR is a frat boy jam band. You're wrong. I'm right.

any OAR concert, typically, is just a giant frat party.
