bob marley was rumored to have a stable of dreadlocked unicorns. deep in the mountains of jamaica. it has not been found and it has been said that rita sold them to the irish after his death. unfortunately, the irish shaved the dreadlocked unicorns and affixed them with silly green leprechaun hats.
wow this is what this community is turning into? jeez what happened to the love and the good convos? cmon people lets try to make this forum a little more enjoyable....lets not bash each other, religion, white black whatever.....stop the bashing
i dont care bout the context to be honest...it's just flat out racist...that's my point... everything i've posted was my own personal opinion, i dont need to educate myself on my opinion i never claimed to know anything about rasta's or their views...and i didnt try to post regarding those specific topics... i want dreaded unicorns
haha...well seriously my whole problem is just the "white" part... and you say it's because capitalist america is predominantly white, right? well, the NBA is predominantly black, as is the NFL...but we dont call those the "Black National Basketball Association" or "Black National Football League"...cause that would be racist... know what i mean?
of course it would be racist. but the rastafarI faith is racist. if you look at the howellite tenets (just google it im too lazy to do the work for you right now) some of the main points are hatred for the white race and revenge on whites for their wickedness. it would also make more sense if you understood the social revolution taking place at the time when bob was alive. political conflict between the white british powers and the black jamaicans was a big deal to him. america had interests in jamaica and in bob. they kept tabs on him because he was anti-capitalist and pro-revolutionary. he was indoctrinated by his 'elders' to hate white capitalist america. this is part of the reason he and peter tosh parted ways. tosh was traditional, bob wanted to include whites in his philosophy because he himself was half white. many traditional rastas rejected marley after he gained fame in the white world. but then again, many traditional rastas refuse the white man's technology like tv, internet, newspapers, toothbrushes, etc. this is why i mentioned white capitalist america. if you aren't naive you can see that whites clearly have the power in america, no matter how much they tell us to be P.C. about everything and treat everyone equal. that's the reason there is affirmative action, because a white is more likely to get hired for the same job than a black. even if their resume is exactly the same. shit, even a white man owns BET. the white capitalist powers have control over our media, which tell us that the black man is to be feared and hated (ever watch the evening news? lol) dont fool yourself. white men own america. they have since the birth of this country, and probably always will. the wealth distribution is grossly in favor of a handful of white elites. im not racist. thats not why i mentioned it. you have to understand the rastafarI worldview to really get what vigilante and i are talking about it. damn thats a lot of text. im open for discussion on the matter
Bob said it himself you have to born into the tradition I dont get how people can just become rasta. What sparked the interest? Im betting it was marley unless you were native to islands who have high numbers of followers
lol...you're missing my point i think...which im sure im to blame for (no sarcasm...100% serious...damn, the more i try and point out that im not bein sarcastic the more sarcastic i sound ) i know that for the most part whites are in power... and i can understand that rasta's would hate whites because of their history... but, i just think it's unfair to label it "white capitalist america" or to say that "the white man is evil" or anything like that, because as i mentioned, any race in the same position would abuse their power just as much... while i understand why rasta's hate whites, it's unfair... my brother has been mugged once, and robbed at gunpoint once...mugged by a mexican, robbed by a black man...however i dont say "mexican" or "black" criminals...i just say criminals... that's the only point im tryin to make... and im gonna go ahead and bring this thread somewhat full circle around to the original point, why hate on white kids for wearin marley gear, when he's the first rasta that extended a hand of friendship in our direction?
im not even going to reply to all that. its obvious we dont see eye to eye on this. but i will reply to this: cuz as i said in my original post, rita sold bob's image to capitalism. bob was anti capitalist. rita has control over bob's estate and 'zion rootswear', which is a clothing company in which the clothes are made by slave labor/child labor in third world countries which bob would not agree with if he were still alive. his image is being sold to further the profit margins of his estate. its obviously not to get his message out, since 9 out of 10 of those images are of him smoking dope and have nothing to do with his real message which was justice, equality, and liberation. ive seen tons of images of bob smoking dope but never have i seen lyrics printed on a shirt from 'zimbabwe' or 'war'. its hypocrisy IMO its like the middle class kids wearing che guevara shirts. i tell those people that if che guevara saw you wearing that shirt he'd shoot you in the face. if you purchase/wear those clothes then you probably fake as fuck and imma call you out on it. that is all /rant
well from my experience as a middle class white kid, i will say that my knowledge of bob marley and the rasta movement was limited to none... of marley, all i knew was that he played reggae, smoked pot, and was rasta of rasta's, all i knew was that they liked reggae, smoked pot, and...lol? pretty much marley was all i ever knew about rasta's... assuming other white middle class kids had the same experience as i did with those area's, well, it's just not fair to give those people so much shit for that stuff...they just think it's cool and wanna go with it, and they're not necessarily at fault for it, and personally i dont think there's anything wrong with it...actually most of the people who are into bob marley (that i know of) are just potheads...bob seems to take the place of the almighty pothead, and since he's associated with rastas, well that gets the "pothead religion" (or movement) title...which is where a lot of the "posing" comes from i think... i dont think it's right to give them shit for it...educate them about the rasta movement, and bob marley, and what they really stand for, and all that jazz instead... how can you be held accountable for something that you dont know? especially if you dont know that you dont know it? as far as marley's image being sold and the way the merchandise is made/marketed/blah blah/yada yada...yes, that is all wrong, he's probably rollin constantly in his grave cause of it...however, no one but the people with the rights to the marley empire can control that outside of a full out boycott, which won't happen simply because no one knows much about what is *actually* behind it all...personally, i didnt until i read this thread i've bought 1 bob marley item...it was a clock, with the mandatory pic of bob smokin a huge-ass joint...gave it to a friend for christmas, and now i got no clue where it is cause he sure as hell dont got it :/
thats why i feel so strongly about this. and ya, maybe my approach is the wrong way but thats just my personality. whoops if ya e-feelings got hurt cuz i bashed ya:cheers2:
