Our education system really isn't that great. A lot of other countries offer free education and those countries actually invest a good amount of money into making sure their citizens actually get a good education.

America might be a better place to live than third world countries (although thats relative...just because we have a wal mart on every corner and american citizens can buy cheap goods galore to maintain comfortable lifestyles doesn't neccessarily make us better), but thats not really the point.

The point is that we are falling really far behind other developed nations with wealth comparable to ours.

The USA has some major problems and corruption.

Some people like the bury their head in the sand about them. Or they are just ignorant and uninformed about how things really work.

The USA is an alright country to live in. But it has gone downhill a LOT in the past few decades and it keeps on declining.

We need to wake people up and have a revolution. Not just in the US. But in all the fast paced, destructive, capitalist countries.

I know this thread has been silent for a little while now, but 2 people posted these links in a brand new thread made today and I think they apply to this discussion.

The first one is long, but if you watch it all the way through, you do see 2 men arrested for trespassing with intent to FEED, though the arrest took place because the two "Criminals" (not in my eyes of course) ignored their first warning. BUT SERIOUSLY to arrest someone for feeding people in a public park is INSANITY. Check out how many police officers were involved, and contemplate how much money and time was wasted on this BS of an arrest.

    https://www.youtube.com/v/Eg_ZAhnEPPs

and here is another video that someone different posted in that same thread. It's an interview with one of the protesters during these schenanagins (sp?) it had me cracking up, I really want to hug this guy :p

this is definitely reason to demand change within our country which is NOT perfect.

i couldn't help but bring this thread up again...I'm simply EXTREMELY curious about the OP and some others feelings about the USA now that Occupy Wall Street has been happening for 3 weeks.

You've just illustrated an interesting issue. Once upon a time, this country was great! It's NOT anymore, but I don't expect a young person to get it, since they weren't around when America was truly "great".

Many YOUNG PEOPLE like you don't understand HOW MUCH THIS COUNTRY has changed since the 1960s. So of course you don't understand what went down, how many people have DIED needlessly due to US policies and warmongering around the world.

You don't see what is really going on, how IMPERIALISTIC America has become since before WWII when we had a policy of neutrality.

Now we are the world policemen and having to pay DEARLY to be that.

I guess you love funding wars that kill thousands of innocent women and children.

I guess you can sleep soundly at night, ignoring your own culpability in this... Good for you. Remain ignorant at your own peril.

That's awesome! Politicians and authority figures should be shaking in their boots. Is it time for an 'American Spring"? The young er generations are awakening! Beware!

Besides traveling around the world, twice, I've lived in foreign countries for more than a decade, including the Netherlands, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Germany.

Everyone of those countries has a better system than ours. The European countries I mentioned have free or nearly free health care, 6-8 weeks paid vacation for EVERYONE, great retirement benefits (cradle to grave care!), job security (not so much in Spain anymore), etc.

So I don't know where you've "traveled" but like a typical American tourists you don't seem to have learned anything about the places you've been or maybe you were just on a MILITARY excursion like so many Americans who think their military service overseas make them some kind of expert on how ppl live in other countries and their social system...

Was America really great in the 60s? The long hard fight for civil rights, for minorities as well as women... it's all very admirable but if the US was great at the time these fights wouldn't have been necessary - especially so late in the game when many other western nations were already offering equality. Not to mention assassinations, the escalation of the Vietnam war... I can't really think of a time, historically, where I see the USA being a Great Nation.

"We're given so much." What is with this idea that the governments have some sort of divine right to everything and are saints when they drip feed us tiny bits of what's already ours.

"The bank robber was so gracious. He gave every teller a nickel on his way out."

Primal Flow, Exactly! The USA has/had so many natural resources robbed by thieving politicians and their cronie corporations. IF we had or would manage our natural resources correctly every US citizen would be receiving royalty checks (not just Alaskans). The rich plunder, w/politicians help, while the poor get nothing. It's time to end this shit! Also, we taxpayers give these energy companies tax breaks and us taxpayers give them money to plunder OUR natural resources. WTF!

I see your point, but I am not going to stop. I want certain things to change until EVERYBODY is taken care of. just because in comparison to the third world we have it really good, doesn't mean we can't aim higher. and it's not about monetary gain or filling a house full of stuff, the things I want to see change are more social in nature.

Fuck whiners. Most of the time the people bitching about the police are the ones breaking the fucking law all the time.

That's the cost of not being discreet with your illegal activities. lol

Ever had cops tear your house apart without a warrant and hold you hostage on your own fucking front porch?

I have. I still don't hate all cops as a result. But I don't trust them. Not a goddamned one of them. Nor do I look at them blindly and see them as public servants. They're not public servants, they are government revenue collectors. And they will cheat and lie their way through to fuck people over. It's just sad that the few good cops around have all these douchefucks making them look bad. And I don't think it's stepping too far on a limb to even say a majority of cops are crooked sons of bitches (and bitches, too, I suppose, I don't deal with many female cops around here) on a power trip.

Being told by an ex-cop himself that he stayed with the profession as long as he did because of the literal adrenaline addiction he developed by busting people and tearing apart families, it's kind of hard not to believe that many fall into the same addiction and power hunger. And living in a town in which we just lost our chief of police of several years (I can't remember a time when he wasn't chief prior to now) to some big scandal that they still won't talk about, though a lot of the town knew about his involvement in the drug trade and blackmailing and rape of several women while he was in office. I'd wager to say that for every good cop out there, there are probably at least 4 others who are crooked as fuck. But with the sad shape the world is in and the pathetic state humanity finds itself in, is it really surprising that so many cops turn out to be power-hungry idiots?

Exactly! It started after WW2 with the military Industrial Complex. Corporations spreading their capitalism around the world with Uncle Sams army backing them. Venezuelas Chavez said "fuck that", Kicked out Exxon and started selling it's own oil. I'm very surprised we didn't invade for that. Thats what the US does. Thats the same premise we invaded Iraq. Corporations (with the USA as their bodyguards) want control of oil so they can control the price. Did you ever wonder why oil was cheap during the 90's? Cause Iraq was flooding the market, keeping prices low. As soon as we invaded prices went thru the roof! Iraq was awash in money even with 'the oil for food embargo' and were developing at a rapid pace. We sent them back to the stone age bombing them. We freed them! Ha! We freed the oil corps to set their own profits. All those soldiers and civilian deaths over oil money not freedom!

How much worse it is other places is not an excuse for how much worse it is than it could be here.

So this thread is a bit old. But whatever.

To all the people saying that other countries have it worse than we do- Does that really seem like a logical conclusion for us to forget the troubles we still face? I'm a broke college student that's thankful as hell for the money I did receive to be here, but I'm still going hungry and can't find a job to buy a car, can't get anywhere to get a job. My parents live an hour away and they can barely keep their heads above water. How can you say "Others have it worse" and expect me to say "Yes, and I'm sorry for complaining."? We have it bad too, most of America does, and while we have food to eat and shelter, we're not going to stop wanting more out of life. You never should stop wanting more. That's just life.
And has anyone even mentioned that we have 3rd world places within the United States? Take a look at Pine Ridge Reservation and most reservations. It's terrible the way they have to live, and how the government doesn't do more for them, if they're doing anything. We have problems in our own land, WHY should I be okay with us invading others and interfering with them to try and "save" them before they save US?

I think you are close to completely missing the point. Police arresting people for things that are clearly illegal is one thing. But most of us here are not referring to police brutality in regards to illegal substances. I hope you have been paying attention to recent news, police brutality in this country has been happening at higher rates due to the Occupy movement. I've seen pictures of a woman who was 75+ in age and had just been sprayed directly with pepper spray.

this video is from November 20, 2011. Please watch it, it has received more publicity than other stories of the sort. If you rely on mainstream media outlets, I suggest you start turning your eyes elsewhere. Democracy Now is a great source (democracynow.org), mainstream media has never been 100% completely honest, and now is worse than ever...well maybe not ever.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/19/uc-davis-police-pepper-spray-students_n_1102728.html PLEASE watch THIS video.

Also, here is a link to a story about a former police captain who was arrested (wearing full uniform) during occupy protests. He was vocalizing his concerns that the police are becoming the pawns of the 1%.

We are not whining; we are aware of the many injustices that are present in this "Democratic State."

So this reminds me of a quote I read yesterday first in a thread here on HF, but then from the actual news source. which I will quote here.

The article is from Washington Times, and is about the Occupy movement targeting Congress and Lobbyists (THANK YOU, it's about DAMN time, but thank you times infinity OWS). anyway I encourage you all to read the article, but I will quote an excerpt from it that might make you raise your eyebrows:
    http://communities.washingtontimes..../occupy-wall-street-targets-congress-99-vs-1/

Yeah that's a bit shocking is it not?!

What terrifies me even more is this new to-be law "National Defense Authorization Act" that would allow the government to detain anyone suspected to be a terrorist. It would allow for indefinite detainment, and that is without even being formally charged. This could lead to unnecessary executions. This law would allow the government to illegally detain foreigners as well as U.S. citizens.

Considering how worked up we get when we have our own citizens getting illegally detained (thinking most recently about the hikers detained in Iran), who the hell does Congress think they are to make a law like this, both for it's own citizens as well as those who are citizens of other countries?! This is terrifying PERIOD.

    Police state, here we come?
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/...-detain-americans-indefinitely_n_1119473.html

PLUS they want to try censor the internet....sorry I didn't think I woke up in communist China this year.

Oh and with everything Congress could be working to resolve, they instead made tomato sauce an official "Vegetable" (I have a thread about this if you don't know about it yet) but this would cancel out the changes to standards within school lunches proposed by the US Department of Agriculture earlier this year which: limited potatoes in schools (GREAT idea), limited sodium (which I guarantee is predominant in the tomato sauce that is now a vegetable), and increased WHOLE grains (another GREAT idea)....

Congress is fucking up so much, and our country is NOT what it used to be. Please don't assume that I think our country has always been great, because I don't. On the other hand, the American Dream is important, being able to work hard and make a living that allows one to live and EAT, is crucial. We did have that at one point. There are things we can IMPROVE to become a once great nation, but many things need to change, including those in Congress.

sorry for this long rant :( / :D
