It is essential if your trying to be successful by other people's standards otherwise how are you a failure if you remain true to yourself? Forget about success or failure. Who defines those things anyway? Plenty of people who appear "successful" in life and they don't seem all that happy despite that. Many seem miserable even after achieving their goals. Their happiness is often just temporary.

 

We're humans and the pursuit of happiness involves setting personal goals and striving to achieve them. Once a goal is reached, set another, then another. Without confidence goals are less likely to be met, resulting in frustration, resulting in unhappiness, resulting in even less confidence.

Confidence is believing in yourself and in your ability to succeed at any goal you pursue. And if you fail it means realizing that it doesn't make you a failure, and you have the confidence to try again. That cannot be overrated.

 

I actually find that kinda sad. Society has imposed upon others that we need to do something worthwhile just to be seen as worthy. That people believe that to be happy and successful you must have goals and achieve them. Its no wonder many people fall into a depression. Why not feel worthy and grateful just to be alive in this beautiful planet? Feel success just for waking up today, while others are dying. Is that not more than enough? I'm not against confidence. If you have that, great, use it to your advantage. I'm not against having goals either. Goals make life more interesting. I just feel people place too much importance on superficial qualities.

It is if the person still behaves like a jerk.
