I had to register so I could post on this thread. I am totally blown away by some of the ignorant comments. All I can say is DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! I have been vegetarian for the past 23 years and have a vegetarian 14 month old. I make all her food. She eats organic, healthy food with whole grains and also eats dairy and eggs. My husband is not vegetarian and when I told him I wanted to raise her vegetarian he said no. So I told him to do research on it and then we would discuss further. After doing his research he was 100% for raising her vegetarian. We absolutely don't need meat at any age. That is not to say that it is terrible to give your child meat, but we don't need it. When my daughter gets older, if she wants meat she can eat it. Right now we feel it is healthiest to feed her the way we are. She is over 100th percentile for height and weight and hasn't been sick a day in her life. Don't take opinions on here. Do your research and come to a decision for what works best for your family. If you choose to go veggie then do it the healthiest way possible, and if you choose to feed meat, do it the healthiest way possible. And by the way, very few people in developed countries have protein issues. If you eat enough calories you pretty much get enough protein. And it is a myth that you need "whole" proteins. Again, do your research. Congrats on your baby!

My child, at age 3, gave up meat and fish the moment she discovered that they are dead animals. She has grown up to be very healthy and happy. She just ran a half marathon.

Why do vegetarians/vegans always feel the need to preach about what they eat and don't eat. Im not talking about anyone in particular, just in general.

You're stereotyping. I don't preach. In the 38 years since I stopped eating meat, I haven't convinced anyone else to. Even my three year old daughter decided on her own.

I'm pretty sure it's more than a stereotype.

You are not being very nice, r0llinstoned.

I have met a lot of vegetarians in my lifetime, all of them wonderful, healthy people, and none of them ever preached to me to also be a vegetarian. I respected that they did not want to eat meat and the seemed perfectly capable of respecting that I do eat meat.

I dont' preach to anyone, but everyone tries to tell me that I should eat meat. Ive been a vegetarian for 23 years and doing quite fine. Friends and family get on my case for raising my daughter vegetarian. One actually said to me "but are you going to tell her the truth about meat?" Ugh....I wanted to say "what truth? That meat is a dead animal that was fed a bunch of hormones and antibiotics and then slaughtered. Yea, I guess I'll tell her the truth. Are you going to tell your child the truth?" But I bit my tongue.

Uhhh yes. I had to register and post on the VEGETARIAN forum to tell someone who is making a big decision (whether to raise her 7 month old vegetarian or not) to do her own research rather than listen to the ignorant comments saying it is terrible or "child abuse" to not feed your child meat. Maybe you should reread my post. I couldn't care less what she chooses, but I want her to make and informed decision, not one based on the opinions of people who have obviously done zero research on the subject matter.

Did not read the comments.. I am vegan and have 2 vegan kids, there is absolutely NOTHING in meat that we need that isn't in fruit, veggies, beans, lentils & seeds ...

Make your own food for the kid if you want it mashed.. or check out baby led weaning and let the kid learn to eat boiled veggies and raw fruit (bananas and avocados are good for a start)
