I'm glad you learned somethings about your grandpa when he was a young man. Lots of times people won't tell those stories themselves.

First training session with that fighter was this evening. The good news...I'm off to a great start in getting him to not be a hot head. The trick? Show him what he's capable of if he's calm and using his head. You can't set these moves up if you're not thinking properly. I decided to go with a limited but devastating playbook. I was doing things to him (slowly) that made him look like an amazed 10 year old. He kept saying things like "Holy fucking shit!" When we got done, my wife asked him if he learned anything. He said "Those hits come from nowhere! It's like a ghost hitting you!"

That's the bad news though. He's got a great ground game but his stand-up is so sub-par right now. The other bad news is that his fight this coming Friday. I thought we had more time than that. I'm not sure how much I can do for him in less than a week. This is stuff you need to train for over a long period of time to just be able to take your shots without deliberating it in your head. You just have to react and fire.

I'm debating on just beating his ass for the next three days and also explaining what I'm doing afterwards. That might be the best crash course.

I've had a Bay Leaf tree (indigenous to the Mediterranean area) for at least 15 years. I ordered it and it was about 8" high...through the years its grown, etc. This past winter I even did what I call acclimating it to the outside here. When it turned warm (hot) the leaves on it came in thicker than ever before and it looked GREAT!

Then about 2 1/2 weeks ago, literally overnight, ALL the leaves - but on one "branch" that bolted from the bottom, at the soil line - curled up, as in what happens when a plant needs water. I immediately began giving it a 1 1/2 gallon bucket water once or twice a day. Nothing changed but the bolted branch continues to look good and healthy.

    I can't believe this.

I'm waiting until after the upcoming new moon to (hopefully and successfully) root the one and last healthy branch. Yes, I've followed the almanac for years when I'm serious about wanting something to work - either outside with plants or with the dentist.

What in the world could have happened to this tree overnight? This tree that I've nurtured and looked after for years now ... :-(

Possibly some sort of nutrient depletion in the soil from that rapid growth? When you see decline in the foliage of a tree that has no obvious signs of damage....lots of times the issue is in the soil.

Edit....are you saying you're putting 1 1/12 gallons of water in the pot once or twice a day? I don't know how big this tree is but that seems excessive for any potted plant or tree. Too much water kind of drowns tree roots. It's basically the same result as soil compaction on the roots. You might want to consider re-potting it.

Going boating today! It's a great day for it. There will be at least 10 kayaks going out...maybe more. Floating down the river is one of my favorite ways to spend time with friends. :)

We ended up with the 10 boats we were originally planning on. 14 people (4 tandems). We came up with a game today that we named "Apple Core". Someone eats an apple and leaves a decent sized core. The core floats down river with us so we used our paddles to pick it up and throw it to other boats. Points for hitting another boat, points for catching it with your paddle. Lot's of fun and....a good thing for the less experienced boaters to get a chance to learn to maneuver their boats and chase the apple.

This was my daughters first day on her own with her own boat. She did great. One of the funnier moments of the day (I wish I had it on video) was when one of my friends was going through some rapids. We were all already through and watching. He mockingly went through with his hands up, holding his paddle over his head. He almost immediately centered up on a big rock and came to a dead halt....while still holding his paddle in the air. The rest of us were laughing our asses off. :)

Anyway....here is a pic of our flotilla from today. Good times! I hope you all had a nice weekend.

That was a ton of fun, I know! I bet your daughter felt awesome in her own kayak.

Yep. Great fun. She's been on boats for most of her life (either on our fishing boats or in canoes or tandems that friends own...until we recently got our tandem) so we were ok with her having her own boat on a pretty low river at this time of year. But her having her "own" boat means her having my boat and me using the tandem with my wife. I'd rather be in my boat but....let her use it. She was only a little nervous when she had to navigate rapids. I told her to stay right behind me and remember that the water is pretty low. Nobody is going to drown. Everything is ok.

Oh...she's almost 12 and she's convinced herself that she will be driving her moms current car when she is old enough to drive. The problem is that I'm going to trade that car in December and get the newer, faster (freaking awesome!) model that we have on loan right now. Then I will trade that car in when she is 14 and get a newer version of the same car...aaaaannnd...she isn't driving that car....at all. I have a Honda that's just waiting for her. Tough shit kid. You can use my boat but not the car. Deal with it.

That's right. Kids are damn lucky to get any car at all.

My granddaughter will be 13 in a few weeks.

I cannot imagine that dingy girl on the road...And guess who will get to teach her.

I'll have to get my doctor to prescribe medication for my nerves when that time comes around.

I usually get a big Pot Roast and cut it into steaks for the grill... 2" thick steaks.
