Random Facts #54

"My fighter" came over tonight to update me with info he got today about his fight on Friday night. His opponent is 1-4 and isn't supposed to be very good (obviously). He also supposedly has a "glass jaw" (perfect for what I've been showing my guy!) There's more info but I'm pretty confident right now...without really showing it to him. We have two more training sessions this week. He'll be fine but he was super confident tonight. I tempered that a bit. I told him "It sounds pretty good but you can't get too ahead of yourself. It never matters who's the best. It only matters who's the best today. Maybe you can beat this guy 99 days out of 100 but if Friday night is day 100...you have a problem. He only has to be better than you for long enough to knock you out and he's there to win!" He has to stay grounded.

He tried to convince me this evening to get back in the ring. Kind of a funny conversation....

Him: You should think about it! Do you know how fast you can knock some of these guys out? (yes) Hell...you could knock me out that fast! (yes)
Me: Do you know how fast my wife would kill me for getting back in the ring?
Him: Hmmm....in a morbidly optimistic way....maybe we don't tell her ahead of time and your opponent kills you first?
Me: Not likely. I'll win and then she will kill me.

Sounds like a soup can fight this Friday. I'll be in his corner. He better fucking win this fight!

 

And the reason I want him to win so much isn't just because I've been and will be working with him. I've also known him since he was a kid. This isn't the first time I shown him a few things. He's one of my sons best friends. I'd be rooting for him either way. And on top of that...his parents/family are not supporting this in any way and refuse to go cheer him on. They don't want him to fight. Fair enough...but he's going to anyway so somebody better try to make sure he doesn't get his ass kicked. I guess I will.

 

To be clear (esp. when he's assuming I would do well)....we're talking about local fights.....not the big names you see on tv. But to be fair....I've seen local bands that I thought were better than some of the shitty bands you see getting famous these days so you just never know. I'm too old for that shit and prefer that my bones stay intact.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the grandson complaining, non-stop, while doing his homework.

i wonder how many more times these bears have to come around before my neighbor figures out its probably a bad idea to leave his garbage outside all the time

 

bear season starts early this year for archers 2 weeks from now.. area 2b, just a tad bit west of me..

 

2 thoughts here - I'm really glad you are there for this young man...for teaching and working with him, as well as being there to give him emotional support and stand in his corner. (I've come to the conclusion you're a good man.)

#2 - My heart goes out to the family...not wanting him to fight. However, as you said, seeing as he seems/must be determined to do this, they should stand behind him. I literally cannot imagine my son doing anything and (even if I wasn't thrilled with the choice) me not standing behind him with support.

Thank you. I try to be one of the good guys. I'll always be there for these kids. I might not always tell them what they want to hear but they know I have their backs and I'm straight with them. I think that's part of why the kids friends like me so much. It sounds like his mom changed her mind and decided to be there. She's trying to talk his dad into going. That's cool. They don't have to like it but it would be nice to see them there for moral support. They don't understand it but they probably wouldn't unless they've done it.

We did more training this evening. I am so swamped right now with work, music in different bands and trying to get this kid ready.... Evidently, the promoters expect him to win and asked him to put on a show for the crowd instead of ending it quickly. I told him that we aren't going to play that game. You're getting paid if you win. Every bit of time that this other guy is standing is just more time that he gets to land a lucky shot that takes you out. He needs to take him out as quickly as possible. There is no reason to take chances like that in your first fight. He told me tonight how much he appreciates that he will be able to talk to me in the corner after rounds. I told him he isn't going to do that because he will knock the guy out very quickly. There will be no conversations like that except for before the fight. I expect this to go 30...maybe 45 seconds...tops (I haven't told him that). A soup can vs. the moves I'm showing him? This should be a short fight. Good thing too because I have a band practice immediately afterward.

That would actually be kind of cool. You could be really quiet and watch them work.

 

There was a newspaper article I read when I lived in Phoenix about the native insects, their pros and cons... the only "pro" for scorpions was that they eat crickets.


Having been stung by a scorpion I never figured crickets were that serious a problem to warrant having scorpions around.

 

To look at it another way, if it's night time and you don't hear any crickets... You're fucked.

Crickets indoors are supposed to be an omen. I think that I've heard it both ways - a good omen and a bad omen.
