It's a shame about that mower... It would have been great if I had gotten it before it sat outside with no cover for who knows how many years. There was only 300 hours on that unit. I'll pull the engine and see if it's rebuildable, but man... that just sucks.

    Hubby is home.

That rat ass surgeon never came by so the nurse called and told him that hubby was going home and that she was re-bandaging the foot.

That's the way it happened. I don't think the surgeon was happy with her but, jesus christ, he hadn't been by since he operated last Wednesday night.

Anyway, he's home and he said the foot looked good when it was un-wrapped.

Well....obviously. I guess I didn't see where he said that though. Must have overlooked it. But I've heard sometimes you can pour a bunch of Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinder, let it sit for a while and maybe free it up. No idea if that really works or not though. You'd think you have to at least hone the cylinder and put a new ring in if it was locked up for very long, wouldn't you?

Marvel Mystery Oil or SeaFoam... Chances are though the rings will stick though....

It's out of the tractor and on the floor in the garage. I'll have to tear into it. Right now I have oil and WD-40 in the cylinders to soak for awhile.

I was just looking and that's a $1000 motor, used price. I found a good one fairly local for $500. Despite the fact that I don't have that kind of cash I can get a whole tractor for $500 in running and ready to work condition. Crazy.

    atf oil works well too

its usually just the rings ..quick hone and new rings with a good piston cleaning usually works just fine on old engines

depends how bad it is of course

i have an old twin briggs horizontal shaft opposed twin i been planning to clean up it had a bit of water but came unstuck easy with just minor pitting ....

It's too bad a lot of schools aren't like they used to be. One of the classes I enjoyed the most in high school was one (don't remember the name of the class) where we all brought in old lawn mowers and spent the semester completely rebuilding them. Tore everything down to individual parts, replaced what we needed to and we all rebuilt our mowers. I even sanded down my mower deck and made it look like a new mower. And then, of course, my dad made me mow the grass with our "new" mower.

Another really fun class I had was a "computer tech" class....before modern computers were really popular. This was about using acid to design circuit boards, soldering resistors, diodes, etc. That was pretty cool.

But I didn't really start to completely understand engines until I was on a tree crew and had a boss who was old school. I hated it but I look back with nothing but appreciation. If a clutch needed to be replaced, an intake manifold gasket needed to replaced...a saw needed to be rebuilt....we did it on the side of the road or where we parked our equipment at and most of the time...if was that old man just telling me what to do and I did it. He used to piss me off but...looking back...he taught me so much and I now realize he was actually taking me under his wing because he believed in me. He spent a lot of time making sure I knew how to do all aspects of my job. I look back on him with fondness. He taught me a lot.
