I always wanted a massive blue spruce

 

Got the first coat on tonight. I may apply more coats. We'll see what it looks like when it's dry.

I also went over to a friends house today and picked up a Craftsman lathe. It was his grandpas (who is currently 102, I think) and nobody in his family has any interest in woodworking. It looks practically new but it was made back when stuff was made of thick, heavy metals. Built like a tank and damn near as heavy too. I got the lathe, a bunch of lathe tools and some other various clamps, etc for $100.

He also has a huge planer/jointer that I'm going to buy from him for another $100. Same brand and era. Same condition. He also has a table saw but I passed on that because I already have a table saw and don't really have room for another one. I would have liked to have brought the planer home today but I had that Cypress tree in my Jeep and I had to take the lathe apart just to fit it all in with the back seats laid down.

So that was cool. He's one of my bandmates and best friends. He said he couldn't think of a person he'd want to have his grandpas stuff more than me. He said his family will be happy that his stuff is being used again.

 

That wood is so gorgeous...I could eat it!

ya man....58 in my living room....my furnace kicked in......I have now countered with a fire

 

I don't start the wood stove or furnace this time of year... It's the principal of the thing.

 

furnace is set at 60....if i have too cold a house my tomatoes wont do well and i cant give away any sauce to family and friends ;

 

It's beautiful here in town today. But it's super windy out of town where we normally work. I called it at about a half day today. Sitting on my shaded deck with the yard looking lush and green...flowers blooming. Birds chirping. My favorite place in the world.

I suppose I better plant that Cypress tree since I don't have anything going on this afternoon.

 

Missed this yesterday. I have a nice Blue Spruce in the corner of the yard near the back of the garage. It isn't massive but it's maybe 30-35 feet tall.

All of the sudden, I'm slightly irritated again about that tree. The branches used to go all the way down the trunk and nearly touch the ground. That's the way it's supposed to be. This used to be a rental house for a few years and some renters took it upon themselves to trim off the bottom 8 feet or so of branches. You guys would not believe how pissed off I was about that. They said it was too hard to mow around. Hello!? There is no grass under the tree! Go live somewhere else if mowing is too complicated for you. I was pretty mad....like....don't you ever fucking touch one of my trees again!

My wife and kids won't even trim minor branches from them. It goes without saying....the trees at our house are 100% my domain and my call in any scenario.....which reminds me....I have some trimming to do today too.

 

the electric heat come on some, but the furnace is off .. some windows are still open, its not that cold here 53F outside , news says 49F. is a little chilly, but a relief from the 90s... good shrooming weather..

 

So I dug the hole for the tree and sat back on the deck for a little break. I happened to look out into the yard about one second before....thump!! A pigeon fell straight down from the air and crash landed in the grass. Like it had s troke mid-flight and just fell on it's side. It laid there for a few seconds and then stood up and looked around. Then the dog ran out there and it flew off like nothing happened. There aren't many pigeons around here at all and evidently, the ones that are here may have health issues. Never seen that before.

Then my next thought was....write a blog about it.

Ok....tree is going in the ground now.

 

My cat scratched me right in the base of my thumb. He's being a dick

It's very difficult to find spruce trees in residential areas that haven't been molested that way.... In most instances they are planted in the wrong place to begin with.


I have a few spruce trees that are natural, but there are a others that have been limbed up... I would imagine it was the previous owners, not the original owner that did this. A limbed up spruce is deer bate, they love to strip off the bark which is a death sentence for the tree.
