I'll go down there and check it out but I'm thinking the bad wire might be one of the ones that come out of the thermostat and that will have to be snaked through the wall and floor. But hmm....that makes me wonder if I can bypass the thermostat. If you did that, I would think it would either run non-stop or it wouldn't run at all. Or am I missing something in that theory?

its should be red/white to the ac itself outside.
but furnace and ac should be yellow/white. if I understand your problem correctly it would be at the thermostat ... Im confident its yellow and white.
nothing is going to get damaged if you move those wires. fan is brown, red, green..

T'is why I end up doing everything myself... Either that or pay someone else and end up fixing it later.

I went down there and this is what I'm seeing. There is a line that I'm pretty sure is the one that comes down through the floor from the thermostat. It has red, green and yellow wires inside of it. The only one hooked up is the red one. That one is hooked to red on the next line. The only other wire in that line is yellow (nothing happened when I connected the two yellows). That line runs into the furnace. There is also a line that runs from the furnace to the AC unit and a different line from the AC unit to the breaker panel. I assume the line to the breaker is power to the AC unit and the other line is for a switch that would receive its signal from something in the furnace which would get its signal from the thermostat.

Does that make any sense? I wish I had one of those test lights that tells you which wires are hot. But nothing happened when I made contact with the other wires...no sparks, nothing turning on. I'm guessing there should be juice to another wire from the thermostat and that's the problem. I could try to hook up the AC and furnace to the same line but I'm thinking if that was safe, they probably would have just done that to begin with. (?)

But at least it's cooled down just a bit and it's quite comfortable in the basement. Nice and cool.

customers who try to fix it themself usually get charged more due to doing stupid things like shorting out wires when they have no idea what theyre doing (therefore causing even more problems)

^^^ Then why can't they just fix it right so I don't have to fix their fuckups after they leave?

thats your fault for not hiring the right person

or you gave them the impression you wanted it fixed cheap so they took shortcuts

or you broke the golden rule of not fronting payment until satisfied

    or youre just never satisfied

I don't think I've really given the impression of being cheap and wanting shortcuts but....I have definitely given the impression of being a fucking prick when some of those guys think they will bullshit me and I'm just going to lay down and take it. And I'm not even really a prick....unless they think they want to try that shit.

But...luckily...in this case, I haven't really changed anything. It's just as fucked up as they left it and if they want to debate that...well....that's a discussion I'm willing to have.

Edit to say.....I'm satisfied when the work is done correctly, as contracted and for the price agreed to in advance unless extenuating circumstances arise. My buddy who did all the paint work? He gave me a price, I told him to add 20% to it, he did a perfect job and we tipped him another 25% because we appreciated his effort. We gave extra money to all of the people who got their shit done in a professional manner. I appreciate their effort and attention to detail and I make sure they know it. But these other fucking guys? They probably think I'm a prick.
