My daughter just called me about Piper. She hasn't eaten. Of course, she's excited. I had to tell her all about her preferences, lifestyle, and quirks. She really did get set in her ways with us.
Damned chilly out there... Not going to finish the gardening today. ( okay... It's gardening. Gardening is never finished)
I knew summer had finally started here, and evidently pretty damn good, but i would never have guessed this was the warmest place on the continent! Ah well, what's very normal is that it never lasts longer than a couple of days It has now been awesome since last thursday though so we dutchies have not much to complain.
Got most of my vegetables planted today and I attached the chicken/rabbit fencing to the ground all the way around. Just a few minutes after I went in the house, a huge rabbit was trying to get in there. I watched him to see if he could get in there. Nope. Not yet anyway. I'm sure they will figure something out and then I'll have to try to out-smart them again.
he'll dig under it i knew someone with a rabbit pen...they had to half bury the chicken wire like 2 feet into the ground
Get some hair clippings from the barber or salon. Put them in sections of pantyhose tied shut. Place them around your plants. Rabbits are supposed to be afraid of human scent.
Yesterday, when I was pulling weeds and getting the boxes ready to plant, there was a tiny baby rabbit in the herb box. It hopped away towards the safety of the deck (which rabbits hang out under). The rabbit from earlier kind of struck me more as a mom checking out the situation to see if she could get in rather than just trying to get to plants that I had just got done putting in the ground. The baby isn't in there anymore. I checked thoroughly several times this evening. I'm sure she knows where it is. But the beds are raised and made of wood and the fence is right up next to the wood so they would have to actually pull the staples out of the ground and pull the fence away from the wood boxes...for most of it anyway. I have a decent relationship with most of the animals so I don't want to be too harsh.
I don't know how old it was but it was maybe 5 inches long and looked a little chubby. I watch these rabbits all the time.....I'm no professional but it seemed young enough to not be on its own yet. Instead of running away quickly, it tried to hide in the herb bed for a while where it felt safe. We just left it alone and it stayed around until we worked on that box. They usually seem to be a little bigger before they are out on their own all the time. But that's just my experience in my fairly animal friendly yard. In any case, so far the rabbits aren't a problem but the real problem later in the year is the squirrels. The rabbits, birds, snakes, etc. all get along well enough with me to be like a fucking Disney cartoon. The squirrels and I aren't tight at all. We are not friends. We used to be but we aren't anymore.
Ive some peppers and brocolli .. peppers mostly because the deer sausage is costing me more in peppers than its worth..
wizard did you see this? kayaktivists http://www.democracynow.org/2016/5/9/headlines/anti_fossil_fuel_actions_held_in_newcastle_philadelphia_amid_global_campaign
I heard a little bit about it. ^^ Sounds like kayaking for a good cause. I went back to the garden after work and there were a bunch of snakes laying in the sun. They didn't seem alarmed that I was there watching them. I see them often. The only time I bother them or pick them up is to move them from harms way. For those who may not remember me telling the story.....I am probably largely responsible for there being so many snakes on my property.
I had my fill of rattlers out in California... Several of those were 6 feet long. Garden snakes I don't mind. __________________________________ Figured out what I'm gonna make my baldric from and what it's going to look like... Kind of a remake/repurpose of a couple of things I made at the boot makers.
I know what all the snakes around here look like. These are just harmless garter snakes. Got the last bit of things in the ground in the garden this evening. Planting is done.
