RF: my compulsion to bake funky pastries has come back big time. My old medium of choice, the cupcake, has been recently replaced by the humble but polyvalent (and flat) cookie. I like what we can do with these, they're so easy to decorate (and delicious to eat!)! I made a batch of orange-chocolate cookies a few days ago without decorating them, but now I feel like cranking up the funkiness factor with all kinds of holiday-themed decorations. I'm gonna have so much fun and it's going to be colorful, cute and sweet! :D

Got some wood cut up today, not a lot but more than I need for tonight... It was in the 20's out there. Weekend in the 40-50F range so I gotta get some trees down/cut/split stacked... Supposed to rain Sunday though. We'll see how it goes.

Both saws are getting dull. Not fun.

Get a round file with no guide. Best way ever to sharpen a saw. People hate to try it but once you get it down...you can easily sharpen a chain much faster than the saw shops do with their machines...plus...it's free. I can sharpen a chain on a 14" bar in about 2-3 minutes and get it at least as sharp as the saw shops get them.

i would rather hear the sound of trains, or even trucks and buses, then the sound of television, radio, commercial recorded music, or frequently, that of the human voice.

i used to love having exceptional hearing when i lived out in the wilderness. having to live in anything resembling a city, i consider it a curse and frequently wish i were deaf.

and a city that doesn't have a good computer parts store and a good model train parts store, has only its restaurants and transit system as a reason to be a city at all.

never understood why people would want to live cheek by jowl without some sort of compensating amenities.

RF: MDMA was originally developped by pharmacists as an antidepressant, then later was being used as an appetite supressant, but in both cases medical use was abandoned when doctors realized people were getting way too high. :D

Yeah, I have files, I just hate messing with it.

Out in CA there was a place I took all my stuff to, it was actually in the back of the local hardware store. That guy could get a chain sharper than new and they lasted longer unless you screwed it up... and he was cheap. Like $5 a chain, even for my 24 inch. I guess having that quality of work available just made me lazy. (the "quality" of my hands also comes into the equation) He also did any small engine/mower/tractor repair for the whole county, could get obsolete parts, would show you how to fix stuff... he would even do quick stuff for free. Just don't touch his tools or he would freak.

When I got this place and bought my saws I asked around for someone similar and it seemed nobody even knew what I was talking about.

RF: Since we've been living in this other house temporarily, I have been using the toilet in the basement to take shits. It's a feature I will miss but it's also the perfect, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an informal personal toilet paper usage study. All I have to do is leave the little cardboard centers down there and do a bit of math when I move out. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

My wife thinks I do a lot of strange shit. :)

Warmer today and tomorrow.... Time to get some more trees down and maybe tackle those widowmakers.

Fun. At least I'll have some more time on the antique Gilson/Bready.

Got some trees down today and that floater from last... whenever it was. I had to cut down that Redbud though... bummer. It had put out more than normal amount of seed pods last season, like it knew in advance something was going to happen. Trees seem to do this. Anyways, I grabbed a pocket full of seed pods and will go back and get more later, plant them and grow some specialty trees for the yard. I hauled the Ash tree out of there and into the backyard. Made a few more cuts on that second widowmaker from the same day and... It's still there. Why? I donno?

Went after another Ash, big(ish) that was free and clear, cut that up into wagon size and hauled it into the yard... Attached photo of the Gilson/Bready at work below. That's the Ash, everything but the branches which I will go back for later. Not huge but do you know how heavy that stuff is... Quite a load for a 58 year old garden tractor... It can haul more. Tractor is as I got it except for two e-clips to fix the steering and I rewound the rope on the pull starter... Dig the tires. Front tires don't even have air in them.

Then I went out the other direction to grab this pine (or other evergreen... Dead, don't know exactly what it was) standing among a shitload of spruce/pine/locust. It was actually in contact with a locust before I started and that's the way it had to fall. I ended up cutting it down vertically... Cut a 4 foot section, yank it out with the John Deere... Still standing. Cut a 4 foot section, yank it out with the John Deere... Still standing. Out of 6 sections only one did the tree fall by itself, all the rest I had to use the tow strap and tractor. It finally fell right where it needed to. Hauled one wagon load down to the yard. There's more to get tomorrow along with a bunch of those branches... Great fire starter material.

Tarped all that after splitting a few pieces for tonight and it was dark. Tomorrow is another day if I can move my hands. Holyshyt do my hand hurt... OW!

Thinking I should change my name to Dances with Trees...

As a matter of fact, yes, I do know how heavy that stuff is! :) But that's a cool old tractor. Good to hear you're able to get some things taken care of.
