Well, I have had what may be called an interesting afternoon. Early in the afternoon I saw 2 deer (again)...I had posted in one of these rf or chat threads about seeing 3 deer last week.

Then just a short time ago, I was pulling up some rampant ground-cover (vinca) and came across what I'm pretty sure was a baby copperhead... Believe me, I was OUTTATHERE!

I've since googled (trying) to get a picture of a baby copperhead and was led to page after page AFTER PAGE, with only descriptions and a wee, minute picture. :( As we were both getting away from each other, I surely did not take time to examine it's head - which is supposed to be a special identifying factor. Nor did I wait to examine it's tail, which is supposedly another identifier.

It was light brown/tan with ittybitty black triangles or diamond shapes on it. I estimate it was about 10" or so long...very small...now. DAMMIT!

and just so y'all will not think I'm being an alarmist thinking it was very possibly a copperhead, or (God help me) a rattle snake...I was bitten by a copperhead on the sidewalk in my back yard in 2000. In fact, it got me 4 times before I managed to disentangle myself so it could slither off to health and happiness. :p

    OMG Lynn!

You know, copperheads don't get very long even as adults...I was on the phone with the water company yesterday and he was asking me about my water use being a little high; I told him we have a leak that we know about and that it involves turning of the water at the street. I told him my husband saw a copperhead in the box and asked him what we could do. I was kind of hoping the water company would come out and clear the damn snake nest out of it's damn box, but no. He told me I might want to put out some lime.

My daughter's girlfriend puts lime on her yard for snakes.

Hubby says he has heard that lime does no good...

If I were you, I would try it anyway.

Dang Aeri! I would have thought it was the water company's job to make sure the box was free of snakes and to come pay a visit to fix any leaks! I'm sure you have to pay enough for this necessity.

I've never heard of putting out lime for snakes. Only this stupid stuff called "snake away" that you are supposed to put around the perimiter of your yard to keep them out. I asked a sales person trying to push this on me...what if they are WITHIN THE DAMN PERIMETER?!? If they "can't cross that line", then I'll for sure be stuck with them, right? They went and waited on somebody else. lol

I'm going to have to try lime...but to cover the area...dear God! It might take pounds and pounds.

I can't believe people actually buy vinca. It could take over the world, not unlike kudzu...and between me and my mother I must admit we have probably been cultivating snake beds by not going to (extreme) trouble to get it under control.

Of course, I must point out that Mama is basically FINE with it. yay! :mickey:
I am the one that wants to either mow it down or rip it up...more than I really can do. A part of me wonders if doing that might affect the whole ecological system on these 2 1/2 acres. :p

Maybe just dust the lime in a big band around the house and leave the farther, untouched parts of the yard, without it.

My son found the body of my cat, Trouble, in the backyard this morning. He wasn't there yesterday. He didn't look like he'd been attacked by anything. He was just laying under the kids sliding board. My son't dog alerted him because she wouldn't stop crying.

    Poor Trouble. RIP, buddy.

Yeah, I'm really sad. I hadn't given up hope. I have kept calling him and calling him. This morning, when I was out side having coffee, I spoke to him and told him that I hoped he was okay wherever he was...It felt kind of final then. I think it was probably a few minutes later when my son went out and found him. Damn it, he was trying to make it home...

EDIT: All 4 of the little ones have their end of the year program at school tonight... I gotta get out and bury my cat before I get ready for that.
