it sometimes seems slightly moreso than others, but sometimes i think it's hard to tell if a beer is skunked or if thats just how it tastes - and often i really kind of like it. hops are very closely related to cannabis (and good cannabis is called skunk for a reason) and sometimes some hops will resemble it more than others. generally its not how it should taste, but some "skunked" beers simply showcase very herbal hop characteristics. granted pilsner urquell uses saaz hops which are generally supposed to be more spicy than earthy, but whatever. i've honestly never once had a bottle of it that i didn't like, whether it's what it would taste like on tap in plzen or not.
Yeah, but there's a pretty noticeable difference between the skunky smell you get from hops and that which is from light-damaged beer. To me, all the green-bottled beers have the same aroma. (Unless you can get a 12-pack or case where the bottles are sheltered from the light.)
no, not always, and in fact clear bottles are far worse for beer than green, which is pretty damn protective in comparison. anyway rat, yeah, it's true what you're saying. perhaps i've just had better experience with PU than you have, or perhaps i just kind of like the taste. some beers are skunked from light but not because it "damages" them but because it's how they are supposed to taste. i read in a brewing book, i believe it was a book by papazian, claiming that one large mexican brewery sent their canned beers through special tubes to expose them to intense light before canning so that it would taste the same as the bottled beers, rather than using brown bottles so it would taste "fresher." i think it's safe to assume it's corono, modelo especial, or tecate or something common in the states. not that these are exquisite beers, but it just goes to show that sometimes that is an acceptable flavor which the brewers intend. i don't think PU is intended to be that way, but i'm just playing devils advocate. i think the biggest difference is how quickly it sells in your area. if the distributors order large quantities but it moves slowly then yeah, it will likely get damaged in time. if it moves quickly or they order more appropriate quantities then it won't spoil. idk, like i said i've never had a bottle of it i disliked, but they do come with slightly variable levels of skunkiness. i just don't think of it as a problem, personally. i like the beer either way, so long as the variation isn't too extreme
