so what "less intense" ways can we protect ourselves?

for example, what email should i use? obviously not my school one, but do i want hushmail or safemail, or should i just use yahoo or google?

 

Dozens of people in the UK who worked with webtryp vendors were busted during a two day series of dawn raids. The LE/media there was making it out to look like a huge synthetic drug ring and they expected to get people with huge amounts of drugs but unsurprisingly they found people with small amounts of personal use drugs, and almost everyone wh ogot raided got community service and probation.

A few customers in America got visits but no charges were pressed and the majority of customers got no visits at all.

I think it is far more likely for customers to be busted en masse than vendors. A single vendor being busted if he uses safe techniques is going to be really hard and expensive to do. Tapping his E-mail and recording customers shipping addresses is trivial and will actually result in something unless they are encrypting (most vendors I work with require encryption for E-mails).
