... because Trump gave out Graham's personal cell phone number today!

Also, John Kasich declared as the GOP's 16th candidate today. Nobody cared. Only his immediate family could possibly think we need another middle aged white guy in the race now.

" In 2001, Kasich joined Lehman Brothers' investment banking division as a managing director. He remained at Lehman Brothers until its bankruptcy and collapse in 2008. Lehman Brothers paid Kasich a $182,692 salary and $432,200 bonus in 2008." (from wiki)

Sounds like he'd be the man for the job... Fuck all, what a moron!

I think your posts are usually pretty well thought out but this particular statement is basically the desired result of propaganda (and also purely hypocritical). Atrocities have happened...no doubt....but this statement is so easy to destroy with possibly dozens of references (or even more) that I respect your intelligence enough to hope that you would do the research yourself and not need me to type it all out.

You dispute the pathetic human rights track records of North Korea, Nazi Germany, WWII era Japan, and the old Soviet Union?

I wasn't really thinking about smaller, more recent actions, where the situations were more complicated.

I'm sure much of it isn't in dispute about human right records...but a lot of it has been exaggerated in propaganda as well....with absolutely no doubt whatsoever. The threat is rarely as great as it's presented and it's always one that rich people will profit from. There are a number of different agendas at play in that realm but none of them are the ones we normal citizens hear about in the media. And for the record.....our country will also be on that list you posted if history is recorded accurately....for sure. Do you think any average citizen from any of those countries would look back and be proud of what happened and them supporting it blindly? Of course they wouldn't. But they were convinced that it was good at the time.....much like us. And there is a very good reason for that.

Edit...by "good reason"...I mean effective reason.

I think a lot of countries probably feel the same way about america, that we have no respect for human life and no moral standards.

war is not kind. Humans turn into soldiers and if they're lucky they find their humanity again after the war. America isn't really an exception to this rule.

Yeah, I wasn't very elegant in what I was saying.
I'm sure McCain went through absolute hell and I wasn't trying to say he didn't.

It's just that I'd done a short search for his military record and saw that he'd crashed planes three different times.
That his service was fraught with bad decisions and lackluster performance.

Basically, had he not been captured, he wouldn't be a hero... he'd be a disappointing footnote.

To be fair though, I should probably do a more exhaustive amount of research before taking a definite stance.

    Probably more like...everyone.

Edit...maybe not everyone but almost everyone. This idea that we are loved and respected everywhere is nothing more than a myth. Empires can perpetuate myths and we are pretty good at convincing our own people of our own greatness and leadership. I bet...behind closed doors...even the vast majority of our "allies" hate us. We do not play nice at all.

So, you're saying that if either Romney/Ryan or McCain/Palin had won instead of Obama, the country would be no different than it is today?

And you can say that with a straight face?

Do you consider those who are proud supporters of their southern (read: Confederate) heritage to be average citizens?

They are average citizens who are easily lead...just like any other place. And to be fair...I was born in Nashville, Tenn. and I am well-aware of the mentality down there...both the good and bad.

    To be fair...

My husband is an airplane guy, and he says most of the Russian-built planes used by the North Vietnamese performed better than ours, so maybe McCain couldn't have done any better than he did. I haven't researched the details, except for that one event on the aircraft carrier. I saw old footage; closest thing to hell on earth I've ever seen. Fires were setting off missiles underneath planes that were blowing up other planes, and crews with tractors were pushing jets overboard as fast as they could, before they could become fuel for the inferno. McCain didn't start the whole thing; he was one of many caught in the middle. The fires burned for more than a day, and the ship was nearly lost. It's a disturbing thing to watch.

In general, I think criticism of him by politicians should be limited to his political views and career. Politically, I've never been a McCain supporter, but I respect what he did before he went into politics.

As a man, Donald Trump is several levels of character below John McCain.

Rick Perry fired back hard against Trump today. I've never heard him do a better speech.

I just meant we have our very own examples of people being proud of a shitty history, so it's not surprising that other countries would have the same issue.

Yup, there's definitely more to the story than I first posted about.
I certainly should've done better homework before commenting on it.

But his time as a POW shouldn't be made fun of, no matter what.

I'm not calling you out or anything....just quoting this as a general statement that many people agree with. I just happened to stumble across this video on my lunch break today. I'm posting it because it has to do primarily with his political actions but it also does discuss some opinions of people who were in that POW camp.

I'll not offer any opinion on it. I'll just let these people speak for themselves. It should be noted that these are Republican lawmakers and high-level congressional staffers who were most certainly in the position to have a valid opinion. It's worth watching all the way to the end.

Edit to say....the title is somewhat misleading. There are some vets and POWs but much of it is who I mentioned above.

    Thanks for posting that video.
A lot of interesting info in there!

It also makes me think this is quite a rabbit hole if I wanted to actually look into the reality and history of it all.
    yowza!

Still haven't figured out why anybody would want to side with that ignorant bully Donald Trump over John McCain.

Trump is the one running for Commander In Chief, while blasting a POW in public. McCain is done with running for national office.
