Even the (real) logo looks like discarded plastic that holds a six pack together.

I was unimpressed in Sydney, looks way better on TV than it does live. Attended the track in the main stadium one night, there's way more downtime between events than you realise.

Plus, I'd never set foot in South America and I doubt most of the locals could afford to go anyway

I thought it might have just been because everyone knew the USA was going to dominate most events, so no point in going. But I think some of the other reasons mentioned above are also likely.

Countries with large populations, land mass, and wealth tend to produce the most athletes. Which is why I tend to enjoy seeing the athletes of smaller and less significant countries win medals. Particularly small island nations.

Some Olympic athletes were robbed the other day. I read the headline in passing and i'm too lazy to go look for it so no link, sorry

But yeah. Rio was probably a horrible place to hold it.

I recall several years ago around the time they announced the 2016 location was in Rio; they were very proud of the fact that this was the first time in history the Olympics were to be hosted in the South American continent. There could have been more viable locations in South America than Rio.

Tokyo should be a good location in theory. I just wonder how bad getting around will be. Isn't that where they have people pushing people to get them all to fit in the train?

Yes, I would blame the Zika virus outbreak in 2015-16 for this. As soon as I read about the Zika virus in the news, I foresaw that the Rio Olympics will be very low in attendance.

It's very unfortunate, as good attendance in the Rio Olympics would have benefited the Brazilian economy and tourism sector a lot and gain back much of the investments it made in its infrastructure development for the Olympics.

As the John Lennon lyric goes, ' "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.'

Difficult to tell if those figures are symbols of the street thugs or the corporate executives running the Olympics.

I love watching the Olympics, I enjoy it very much. After all the shit and fighting with politics right now, it was a much welcome break for me.

There should be a better way to determine where they will be held though. To hold it in RIO where so many are poor and even got run out of their low income homes to build these venues is just wrong. Just wasting money on all that stuff they built...shameful. It should be done where there are already venues.

I was blessed to go to two Olympic games, it is not just for the rich. I was in Korea in 1988 and went to several events. Then I was living in Ga, 40 miles from Atlanta in 96 and went to several events there also.

so if you take videos of horrible areas of any city in the world, you will see shit like this. Just a few random foreigners here and there dumb enough to wander to those less nice areas....

Plus a number of those "thieves" are pretty inept it seems.

    Does that somehow lessen it?
If a thief is bad at what he does, does that make him less of a thief?

The intention, potential danger and potential financial loss are still there.
