Yeah, Jimbo is as fucking lame as they get.

Even Ringo had more talent, and that's saying a lot.

i dont think this is such a bad thing. in fact, it can be a wonderful thing, as long as its recognized for what it is...

the people who are very childish but take themselves far too seriously are the dangerous/stupid/crazy ones, if you ask me (which you haven't haha)

but i too went through a lennon-crazy phase. but eventually i realized his music was borrrrring, and he was a bit of a (major) hypocrite, and....well....whats so great about him?

now i dont HATE him and i'm not GLAD he was murdered, but murder is business as usual in the human experience. sad though it may be, lennon's murder is no more noteworthy than anyone else's except that he was a cultural icon.

i appreciate his work with the beatles, and its sad that he died the way he did, but thats as far as i'll go with it.

I love John Lennon. Together, he and Paul were the greatest musical geniuses of the 20th century.

And just as an aside, my mother was in New York the day the Beatles first landed in America.

I was born nine months and one day later. Coincidence?

I think that it's a bad thing, but that's just me.

People are extremely irresponsible and mostly dumb. Most people do indeed act like children and take themselves too seriously. There is nothing wrong with acting immature, but it all has to be within a certain context.

Lennon is Lennon and Lennon will be Lennon. Nigga got shot, too bad.

Who knows what kind of weak ass shit he would have written if he wasn't shot.

...and the Kerouac thing, I think that he's a better writer than what you give him credit for. The fact that he has become such an icon kinda overshadows his work and makes it seem infantile, but there is still a whole lot of pure literary genius in it.

meh...he had a way with words AT TIMES.......

but overall, i'd say he was a drunken asshole with very little depth. he opened the doors for a lot of better writers, and he wasn't completely worthless, but i really dont think he's very good.

Have you read all of his books?

The Subterraneans is a beautfiul jazz explosion of writing. The Dharma Bums has a pretty good amount of depth and life wisdom to it...

Desolation Angels is a beautiful study in solitude...

I can go on and on.

His writing is like jazz, it's so scattered, yet it flows so perfectly together.

i concede i haven't read ALL of his works, but i have read a few. the first one i read, and what gave me a great love for him initially, was the dharma bums.

then later, another book of his i read, widely heralded, is of course on the road.

people often list it as his best. i disagree, but i do feel it gives some insight into who he was and how he behaved and really thought.

since then, even when rereading dharma bums i can find virtually none of the depth i once did.

the style wasn't awful, the content i disliked.

dharma bums is not without its charm, i wont claim that. but the spiritual/human depth i once found in it vanished the more i learned about him, and the more of his stuff i read. eventually i lost most interest in reading more, but perhaps i should give big sur a chance, i have been meaning to.

all in all, i find him a bit of a phony. he has a "scattered" writing style due largely to drinking and amphetamine abuse. not to say substance use is an illegitimate source of inspiration, because thats not what i think, but i think that in this case it appears to have far more depth than it actually does. and i do admit my knowledge of his works is limited compared to some others, but i stand by it -- for now at least.

but when it comes to the beats, i'm gonna say, at risk of severe and understandable opposition, that i find allen ginsberg to be better
