I give you that we have gained a large amount of control in afgan. but we fight there so much recently that it is almost impossible to launch attack without endangering troops already placed there. and o.k. it does boarder Iran so wouldn't you call it surrounding the enemy by taking control of as many places boardering them? Militarily speaking coming at an enemy from more than one side is more affective than attacking from just one side.

The invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 was not about a transportation route for Caspian Sea oil and gas. While there is absolutely no doubt that Afghanistan is strategically significant and private oil has been waiting for another opportunity after failed negotiations with the Taliban, the trans-Afghanistan pipeline plan was not the motive of the invasion. Many people say that the government was behind 9/11 to give justification to the invasion of Afghanistan (which by the way is a very simplistic and uneducated statement). The US government did not need 9/11 as a reason to invade Afghanistan and remove the Taliban from power. In fact the Taliban should have been dealt with long before 9/11. However, allowing the safe harbor of bin Laden, terrorist training camps, and countless human rights violations was a much easier political decision.

Sarcastic and naive comment. The US military and coalition forces along with US and foreign aid groups have done more for Afghanistan than any other humanitarian aid project attempted there in history. Draw down of foreign military troops, diversity of Afghan forces, a porous Afghan/Pakistan border, and the Iraq example have all contributed to increase attacks on civilians and infrastructure as well as military and security forces. The Iraq war has depleted critical resources from Afghanistan and has provided an example on how to cause civilian and military casualties and delay rebuilding progress. Much work has been done in Afghanstan under very difficult circumstances, and security needs to be an important focus to maintain the initiative.

 

Yes, its all about oil... until you try to explain exactly what that means. Did the US get any oil? No. Then how is it about oil? Err.... its about oil.

Sorry S&P, I think you're trying to salvage something from this argument but its fatally flawed in my book. First of all, I still disagree that the US has any intention of invading Iran. It was no secret that the US wanted to invade Iraq, but nobody is calling for Iran to be invaded, even the PNAC neocons. So the premise is flawed, and I don't see the point of invading every neighboring country just to get a better position on attacking Iran. It would be like building a giant machine to lift a glass of drinking water. The US military could flatten Iran, that's not the issue.

Not to invade Iran to be in a better position against a country that would and could cause serious harm to the world with the development of nuclear w. The threat of the US dealing with a serious situation in Iran has been coming for a long long time. that is what I am talking about. not taking the threat of a country such as Iran producing weapons like this is truley short sighted. I mean really arn't we or don't we have sanctions that will have to be enforced in Iran? The comparison to building a huge machine to lift a glass of water doesn't make any sense unless of course the glass is full of enriched uranium I suppose.

Like I said, nobody has any intention of invading Iran. Bombing maybe, but invading, no. So having borders on two sides is irrelevant.

That makes no sense. Aghanistan was invaded and occupied in order for the US to put a foothold in the area.

Iraq had what weapons and used them when, ten to twelve years ago? Not a good argument.

The US gained control of Iraqi oil production and now has a strategic base to threaten the rest of the area.

I hope we are smart enough not to try and raise an offensive against Iran, because at the moment we can't win it.

A foothold for what? This is the kind of thing people say when they can't think of anything. Did we use Afghanistan as a foothold to attack Iraq? No. Then what was it a foothold for? Maybe foothold means "the country is strategically useless, so it must be a foothold for something else that we can't figure out because otherwise our theory wouldn't make sense".

We first invaded Iraq 15 years ago, so obviously it was relevant then. Iraq had oil wealth. What did it use it for? To build up a huge army, attack four of its neighbors and to wage a genocidal war against the Kurds. If it didn't have the oil wealth, it probably wouldn't have been able to get that many arms and cause that much harm.

You can't make something true by repeating it. We do not control Iraq's oil. I keep asking you to show me how we do, you post a bunch of irrelavant stories, and then nothing. How did you get so convinced that this was true if you haven't seen any actual evidence?

And a "strategic base" in the region? This is just another foothold argument. Its a foothold because its a foothold.

These articles have provided highly specific information on the death of Osama bin Laden and appear to be accurate to me.

The war in Afghanistan was mostly about OPIUM poppies (and the mucho bucks from the illegal drugs that they produce), plus a stategic oil pipeline that was needed. That's all. Not so much about oil.

The war in Iraq is more compilicated and has many multiple reasons. BUSH is a ZAPATA OIL man and loves to control the world's oil reserves, plus wishes to conquer and control the world, to create an EMPIRE, like playing a big game of RISK!. ISRAEL hates its ARAB/MUSLIM neighbors and wants them all wiped off of the face of the earth, and vice versa. BUSH's ZAPATA OIL wells (located in Kuwiat) were "angle-drilling" into IRAQ's oil fields ("stealing oil") and got caught! OOPPS!

If this isn't enough, then there's rumors of Hussein owning a crashed UFO! Ancient Sumeria (IRAQ) supposedly has buried high tech artifacts from aliens and/or ancient ATLANTIS, plus a buried STAR GATE! UFO's have been seen diving into the Persian Gulf, where they have an underwater base. There are many websites which discuss an ancient STAR GATE in IRAQ.
