"Where have all the follower gone" makes me cry when I hear it sung by Peter Paul & Mary

It's one of those songs I'd love to sing live but I'm afraid I'd breakdown in the middle of it crying. Wouldn't make for a good performance lol

Both of these songs are off OMD's Dazzle Ships album. Both songs are sad and haunting in their beauty. Not sure if they're lyrically the saddest songs I've heard, but they evoke feelings of sadness with me. Just really gorgeous early 80s synth pop.

The sound of the mellotron in this song, coupled with Justin Hayward's vocals, make this one of the most melancholy songs I've ever heard. I love it. I took acid to the album this song is on back in 2000.

Yes. I find that the song ooze's that 80's sound that I can't stand. I like the simplicity of the Gary Jules version. The straightforward piano and melancholy voice work well together, and it isn't overwhelmed by 80's-ness.
