Went to see fairport in Blackpool a couple of weeks ago, absolutely blew me away! Absolutely brill! I really want to go to Cropredy, so I'll just have to round up some friends for more fairport fun! I think my favourite song they played was "I'm already there", very haunting.
Got my mum the Best of Sandy Denny for her birthday about a week ago...it's a pretty good album...just thought i'd mention it...
What can I say? Bands like Fairport and Fotheringay (if you haven't heard them and like Denny, listen immediately) makes me envious that I wasn't born in 1950. Oops, sorry Celt. Didn't spot your reference.
Tamlin is an archaic Scottish folk song. I think one of the earliest references to this song was written in the 1600s, but I can't remember where I read that.
I would love to go to Cropredy! Trouble is, I cant drive, and my mum wont let me go by myself. Guess I'll just sit in the garden and play Cds all summer Best of Sandy Denny is an amazing Cd! But then, I think it could be made bigger by a few songs
I love fairport convention! The song "michael" reminds me of a Michael I know. Matty Groves is my favorite song, love the story she tells!! I think someone else mentioned forthingay, they are very good too and you should give them a listen. Ian Matthews of FP fame has some solo works and his debut cd is worth checking out, "Ian Matthews southern comfort". Richard and Linda Thompson did a cd together though I don't like it as much as Ian Matthews. Plainsong is worth checking out as well. "In search of amelia earhart" is the cd I have. I would give Ralph McTell, Steeleye Span, Pentangle (awesome double cd, "Sweet child") and Lindisfarne a look too if you want late 60s/early 70s folk done in a similar style. If you like Pentangle, two of their players, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn have branced out into successful solo carrers. a John Renbourn cd I have is completelty instrumental and is beautiful! okay, enough of that, I lost focus. Fairport convention is one of my favorite folk (rock) bands. some people consider them prog folk even. I have heard the debate on progarchives many times but I am not sure if I would consider them prog or not.
