i somewhat disagree. standardized anythings take some of the ability of the parent to control how a child learns, and definitely a lot of what the child learns. but at the same time, 'some' and 'a lot' aren't 'all'.

i would hate my parents if they had homeschooled me. i have a hard enough time relating to others, and i had 18 years of organized schooling where i was able to learn social skills. taking me to a park occasionally or making me hang out with some other kid that they decided i would be friends with would not have been nearly enough.

    and he's only 16!

of course they are not. most of the things you learn in school you can learn at your own home with the help of books. the main idea of the school for me is to bring the children together and make them socialize and learn them to communicate.

Teach the kids social skills (indirectly) through their interaction with a lot of people of their age.

Have a complete focus on the child's education without anything getting in the way (other family, household duties, work, etc)

I can go on and on.

I went to a wonderful private school.

:D You're right. Phew I'm so glad I quit when I did. I would have been out of a job otherwise. ;)

Schools are important and there are different kinds of schools for children to attend. A parent just has to research them...and I understand that can be a hassle.

I went to a public school, but that's because public schools are quality schools here. And rich kids who can't get into any better public school go to private schools.

And wow.....3 days ! They grow up so fast :(

no, no it's not. The main objective of school is not to socialize and help them learn to communicate. If this were the case, there would be more group work, more discussions instead of lectures and less worksheets. The goal of school is to teach kids things and drill them into them, until they get it, over and over again and THEN socialize and practice what they learned with peers in a group setting. The learning always comes first in any lesson plan or activity. The goal is to prepare them academically to be at par with their peers so they can choose what they want for their future. It's to give them the knowledge to critically think.
I hope when I have kiddos I can get them into a school like KC or Marie's kiddos are in, where they seem to get the best of both worlds.

    No.

    Simply, no.

    I'm glad that you're not a teacher.

There the two main objects to schooling.

    1) To socialize kids.
    2) To establish a sense of responsibility in kids and make them productive members of society. (which does include establishing critical thinking skills)

The lesser object is to actually teach them something... that really depends on the student, who can choose to learn or not to learn.

This is not ideal, but that's the way it is.

British state schools are criminally crap.
They are only nominally interested in education.
The snr staff tended to be Little Hitlers more interested in sad power trips.
    Shockingly poor at teaching,and ill-informed.

I think state schools are "anti-educational" in that mine bred out my passions and people's natural ways of learning quickly.

The private schools get retarded kids thro the exams(spending 12x as much per student)- and it means muppets run the country.
    Britain is shit.

    Cue Odon and his Conservatism...:D

^ it's also to ensure children have access to some sort of academic environment. special time designated regularly to the goal.

i'd scratch the whole "socialize" and replace it with facilitate interaction. it gives more of taste as to what's out there in the real world.

    Uhhum.

Socialize is a weak word, but I use it purposefully when talking to certain people.

I agree with u that that is the true focus of "state schooling for the masses".

However responsibility in Britain means being low skilled subservients, in this context.

Without going into details over the net, I have utter contempt for the British Establishment and gimps that follow it - thats pretty much most of "society".

And schooling made me infinitely less tolerant of many sections of society.

So it all had utterly the opposite effect on me.

Students who do well in school have all the opportunity in the world to be much more than low skilled subservients.

The problem is that most people are complete idiots and are going to end up being low skilled subservients...

It's sad that there aren't enough "gifted" schools out there for the general public.
