I would never disregard modern western medicine, but at the same rate, I wouldn't disregard holistic, homeopathic or old eastern therapies. there are certainly things to be taken from all these schools of healing. unfortunately modern doctors and medicine (science) tend to blow off alternative treatments and schools of thought.

you might want to research cases where western medicine has been stumped and (miraculous) recoveries were made after trying different paths. some decent findings might convince your friend to at least give it a try.

How do you know that dark matter isn't a miraculous cure for everything?

I swear by homeopathy, I use it to relieve symptoms of hay fever and it is the best medicine I have ever found for it. I have also experimented with reiki and i swear by that too. It's not a load of old hocus pocus.

Bollocks. Who the hell do think engineers the great labyrinth of electrical devices used to treat people in hospitals these days?

Yeah I tried all that .Sent him websites , articles from the quality newspapers.
Told him that in Asia these are standard treatments -like acupuncture is in England
Kept trying to apply polite pressure.Maybe Im turning into a Taoist monk or something LOL , but I just get the feeling that , its something beyond me.
Like changing his mind wasnt meant to be : (

well, if he doesn't want his mind changed, you're not going to change his mind. better to hope he's one of the people who will recover from this unknown ailment for no apparent reason.

and yeah McLeod, I haven't tried any alternative treatments myself, never needed to. but I know people who had no luck with traditional doctors, and went to see a homeopath, took one of their cures, and all their troubles were gone. if modern medicine fails me, I won't hesitate for a second to seek alternative treatment.

I'm really freaked by this actually. I'll have to look into it further with limited knowledge of physics and try and work out if it really could be

Italy is near Switzerland, and therefore near to the CERN particle accelerator, I'm thinking at the moment that it could be a side effect of the experiments. I mean, they are doing some seriously fucked up doctor who science down there.

Matter as we know it... the stuff we can "see" with our eyes and touch with our fingers... is made up of fermions and leptons. Electrons are part of the lepton family, and fermios are made up of either protons or neutrons. Fermions are made up of the two lowest mass components from a hexagonal family of quarks. The 4 other quarks are magnitudes more massive and unstable and can only be created on the earth through firing normal particles together very fast.

Maybe what they detected in italy is a consequence of these experiments, or maybe the entire galaxy is going to swallowed up in dark matter. Who knows.

i remember watching a thing about all these physicists heading deep down into tunnels to look for dark matter. the reason made perfect sense at the time.

there's too many staving people in the world to worry about curing the ones already on their way out from lung cancer. seems fairly pragmatic to me. you can't complain about over population and no cure for certain diseases at the same time. it's immensely hypocritical and poorly thought out to me.

but at any rate, what if the cure for cancer IS in dark matter? pure research DOES have it's place in this world.

The whole point of science is exploration, and naturally of course no-one know what we will find.

    Enjoy your placebo. ;)

Not teams of physicists looking for dark matter.

I don't care if it's a placebo, if it is it is a bloody convincing one. One snort of that homeopathic nasal spray and I'm sneezing like a mother fucker and wheezing like an old man. Give it three days though and I am suddenly transformed into this anti-histamine producing allergy terminator. Maybe it is both a placebo and homeopathic miracle.

OK then, all the particle physicist should stop their research immediately and retrain to become pharmaceutical whores. Is that what you want?

Are you saying that looking for dark matter and finding some on earth is a waste of time?

You clearly don't understand how incredible and significant this could be if their claims are right.

I'm saying that it doesn't have any effects on you beyond placebo

Huh? No. I said nothing of the sort.

I prefer learning about physics to medicine as well. In fact, if I didn't decide on pursuing what I am now, I was heavily considering going to school for nuclear physics.

How do you know? Because you watched a documentary on it?

Maybe you are right, but do you think in that case it's wise to go round telling everyone who benefits from homeopathy that it's all in their minds? Maybe realising it's a placebo will stop it from being a placebo you dumbass.

In anycase I think you are wrong, i consider all forms of explanation presented to me, yet my homeopathic medicine STILL works for me. I think that water can retain imprints of things in it's crystal structure and has healing powers beyond our normal perception of the stuff that normally comes out of the tap.
