Nice box, did you heat the metal and press it? I've never seen a 75 ton bottle jack, is it 7.5 tons maybe

it is 75 tons. before that i tried to do this on an electric hydraulic press but it would not go.. was only 10 or 15 tons. these are at work. i will not do it again on this bottle press.. too hard and time consuming. now a friend of mine has a 100 ton automatic screw press. knock that out in no time flat.

oh forgot to answer the other part of your question. yes i did heat it with an oxy/acetylene rosebud. heat until a dry stick leave a black soot mark. roughly 600F if memory serves. too hot and the soot mark will disappear. the material will crumble before it melts. ty

Very Cool! Is that pure aluminum? If not what grade?

I think the ultimate would be to make one in Mokume

Do/can you press brass? What materials present the biggest challenges with the equipment you use?

Methinks, If 75 tons Was Evenly Applied To GLEN, Then Yes, He Would Be

A Very Flat *but still utterly obnoxious* Washer...[IMG].

it is aluminum alloy 7075. it is a mixture of Al, Mn, Si, Cr, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mg, and Ti

    mokume would be awesome

any forgeable material that can be done. brass, bronze, copper, steel, titanium, nickel, stainless. with the particular press i was using any material is a challenge because the press is slow gradually builds pressure as i am pumping away furiously. now if i can use my friends 100 ton automatic screw press it will knock these out in no time flat.. even with considerably larger size stock and more stubborn materials it is no match.
