I once got a seat belt ticket in a large work truck (I realize I said that we don't usually wear them on gravel roads but this was a highway and I had it on). I stopped at a stop sign and a commercial vehicle enforcement officer was just letting another truck go on his way and we waved me over. They don't need a reason to stop you. They stop commercial trucks randomly all day long and inspect them. So I pull over, turn the truck off, unfasten the lap belt (no shoulder belt in that truck) and open the door to get out for the inspection. The officer told me to stay in the truck. Ok...no problem. I closed the door. The guy steps up on to my fuel tank to talk face to face for a minute. We did the inspection and a bit later we're sitting in the patrol car and he says "Do you know what I'm writing you up for today?" Um....nothing since I passed my inspection. Nope. It was for not having my seat belt on. I tried to tell him I took it off when I was about to get out. He said I didn't have it on when he looked into the cab. Well, fuck you cocksucker! He knew exactly how that went down and he just wanted to write me up for something since he stopped me. And then those assholes wonder why nobody likes them? I was totally legal. He could have just let me go.
that doesn't even make sense. i rarely pull out in front of a bike because they're usually speeding anyway, whereas i am much more likely to pull out in front of a larger truck because they tend to move really slow and i don't want to be stuck behind them. and i also try to stay way back from a bike because it's just logical that if i bump them, it could be death, instead of the slight inconvenience if i bump a full sized vehicle. even if i cared nothing for human life, accidentally killing someone on the road would pretty much ruin my life due to the legal ramifications. plus, as mentioned before, it's hard to stay close behind a bike because they tend to go faster than i like to drive anyway. i am positive my first offense in ohio was $200 (or right around there). i don't know if specific cities can increase the fines above what the state charges or something?
Yeah, State, City, County, Municipal fees, everyone wants their piece of the pie Hotwater
much as i wish everyone the freedom to kill themselves as they see fit, i also wish more people would have the same consideration for others, to not take them with them when they do, or leave a mess for someone else to have to clean up after. when i was little, seatbelts were something that only existed in military aircraft. fatality rates for automobiles, were higher then any other mode of transportation, even commercial air travel, which at that time, only the rich could afford. one of those out in plain sight 'secrets' is that they still are. at that time though, there were lots of trains and buses everywhere (in the u.s., as presumably there still are in more civilized places). a lot of people are alive today who wouldn't be if seatbelts hadn't started being build in to cars. but if people had more of a right not to use them, maybe the world would be a better place without some of them, after all.
Thank the idiot Ralphie Nadar for the fucking seat belt laws! IMO it should be up to the person themselves unless under age. I always wear one and never shift until it's on. I speed, but in certain Iowa back roads and only a few mph more. But for the most part, any infraction is just giving them a raise and more cops on the road. I don't want to donate to the state, so take my time and follow almost all laws lol. Plus, IMO driving faster with no belt and regard, you are oblivious to your surroundings or on pins and needles looking for cops and troopers. I have an hour commute everyday and see this all the time. I still catch them at the edge of town or a couple stoplights in, so it's a waste of mental stress and fuel IMO. To each their own, I hate the 5-0 and want to give them no reason to pull me.
