And in 2000 no one would have accepted the Patriot Act. People can be manipulated into accepting anything.
By stating "student loans" I was implying all forms of financial aid. Really the draft has nothing to do with my reasoning because unless the gay thing changes, they won't take me anyway (wasting my time). I am just pissed off at the system. Nalencer are you in Canada? So, your opinion of the US's support is through the media? The men and women fighting in Iraq don't even agree with this bushit. When my dad got back from Iraq, I asked him what his opinion was. He said they are all thinking the same thing we are but, he said that what they are doing over there, to help those people, is worth it. BUT, of course he would say this because some of his friends died over there...he doesn't want to think that they died for nothing. Anyway, my point is there is very little support. Just to add to that...I saw a bumper sticker today that said, "My dog is smarter than our President (picture of Bush)."
Gay thing? I thought the military's policy was "don't ask, don't tell". I don't think you can actually get out of the draft by saying you're gay.
Some of these posts are right when they say it is a long way from registering for the Selective Service to being drafted. The country will not accept the draft under the current circumstances of an unjust war in Iraq. The people who are fighting in Iraq now are volunteers, that is true, but many of them volunteered for the reserves or the National Guard after 9/11 as a patriotic act to show support for their country which had just been attacked. And what Bush did after that was to concoct a war which had nothing to do with Al Qaeda, using false intelligence and lies to justify it. And he dragged into the war these patriotic Americans who did not joint the National Guard or the reserves to fight in Bush's war in Iraq, a people who don't even want us there. How Bush got reelected is beyond me, except that the red states that voted for him provide a lot of the bodies to fight his war.
Can they deny going to War without losing their jobs? Remember I didn't say they disagreed with War, I am specifically talking about the current one.
You really have nothing to worry, the draft won't be reinstated, even at this time. You should just do it, you still can face fines or other unwanted consequences if you dont do it.
And we see why the country is getting worse and not better... No one is willing to stand up for principal. http://www.nisbco.org/FEAT.htm Handwaving and saying "it's never going to happen" doesn't change the facts. It could happen. The war powers act is still in effect from 1933. There have been numerous "states of emergency" instituted and dozens of unconstitutional executive orders since then effectively limiting congress and the peoples power to almost nothing. The president doesn't need congress' approval to do anything. And even that is besides the point. I refuse to register because a draft is essentially forced servitude; slavery. And I believe we already agreed that that isn't ethical nor constitutional.
You are out, but after you are drafted you won't be allowed to admit it. Doesn't mean your butt aint goin to war. Your just not allowed to talk about being gay openly.
I did not agree with your last statement. Wanna live in this country? Then be prepeared to serve it when called on.
I AM serving it by refusing to participate in the saber rattling unconstitutional political nonsense that is currently destroying MY country and destabilizing the world. This isn't 'America love it or leave it' Its 'America love it enough to try to change it' For the people BY the people. I am one of those people. If we have a foreign power invade our soil you can bet I'll be there. But by my own will and volition. I alone own my life, the government doesn't; it has no place to tell me what to do with it, and I refuse to be bullied into something I don't agree with.
I agree with most of what you just said. However, it is not your job to decide which wars are just and which are not. Your job is to voice your concern / protest, but serve the country if called on. On the other hand when I was your age the 1st Iraq war was going on. If they had tried to draft me I would have said hell no! As people get older they have more of a sense of patriotism, nationalism and pride in their country. Whether we are wrong or right and I am going to serve my country. The time for voicing opinions would be before I am called to serve.
Fair enough. Though I vehemently disagree that it isn't my place to judge whether a war is just. As a citizen it certainly is my place as said war would be waged in my name just the same as all of us in this country. The blood is on all of our hands. namaste
There is NOT going to be another draft, ever. The military brass don't want it. Drafts provide an inferior quality of soldier. You get the uneducated, the lazy, the immoral and more desenters than you can shake a stick at.
I would have to disagree, if you sign up for the military they OWN your ass. You are considered "government property". By enlisting you are agreeing to this. So they are free to do with you as they please. If you don't want to be owned, don't sign up. As a side note the whole "I just enlisted in the reserves so I could go to school" complaint is bullshit. You knew that you were whoring yourself out for college, so don't be suprised when your uncle sam wants you to turn a few tricks.
Sigh, yea if you are applying for student loans through FAFSA , you have to accept that they will draft you - if they need you. It just is the way it is my friend, it is completely against my philosophy to fight physically, but if you want the loans, you will have to make yourself available to protect the country when it needs to be protected.
