Walmart has endless sales

 

My first thought is: What did she see in you, specifically, as opposed to all the other people in the store?

My second thought is: What would I have done in that situation? Answer: Engaged in dialogue. First question: "Not like what?"

I've made a friend of a guy who keeps showing up in South Station asking for handouts. I give him a dollar bill every time I see him. He told me once that he was there for his appointment with his probation officer, and then started being apologetic for what his life had come to... I just said, like it was no biggie, "I've been on probation too." Me in my nice black wool overcoat and scarf, the respectable corporate dweeb. Squeezed his shoulder and told him to hang in there. Now every time after I make my donation he always shouts after me, "Take care of yourself." And I shout back, "Thanks, you too."

That's right - women are VERY big on proper punctuation.

I used to make a living as an editor. Interestingly enough, I think professional editors are less nazi-like about grammar than non-pros generally - cuz we realize that the conventions of written English are a moving target.

I love Walmart. They have so much of what I need to buy. I try to be kind to their downtrodden employees. Spending my money elsewhere will not save them.


This is the movie I'm watching at the moment. I feel such a strong identification with the main character in this film, it's almost a little scary.

Arabic such a beautiful language

 

When I studied linguistics in the summer of 1981 at the University of North Dakota, my language helper for my final project was an Egyptian Arabic speaker. He was an obviously educated man, and he was effusive in his love of his native tongue. When he was telling me the Arabic word for "moon," he was poetic in his love for that word: Leal.

"Enuh be'ekul ?aish." I eat bread. The ? represents a back voiced glottal fricative - there is no equivalent for that sound in English.

"Mah selemuh" - Peace be unto you.

A beautiful language indeed.

I hate having fucking animals around.

Several years ago, before our move to Massachusetts, in the midst of winter, with snow all over the ground, a cat showed up at our back door. I told my kids, "Do not feed that cat!"

Guess who ended up letting that cat into our house. Yes, c'est moi.

And we failed to get her spayed, and she ended up pregnant. Guess who she came to when she wanted someone to guard her while she gave birth. Yes, c'est moi. She meowed at me until I followed her down to the basement and sat in the chair she crawled under to give birth to her four-kitten litter.

And then we had five cats.

And guess who let in yet another stray cat who showed up at our back door...

I hate having animals in the house. But even more than that, I hate letting animals suffer when I have it in my power to alleviate their suffering. So I do what I can when I need to.

 

when i was in norristown mental facility i met a guy who was from Pakistan very nice guy taught me some stuff i know a little arabic never really took classes i should through anyway he was telling how beautiful Pakistan really is and America who sees what they want to show you but it has more to offer
