Tom posted the numbers earlier, we have a fraction of the gun violence that the US has, and twice as many guns (Hunting rifles).

You seem so sure of this...

Wouldn't banning guns lead to a bigger black market? It will be just like alcohol prohibition.

More organized crime, bigger black market for guns = (As i see it) more violence.

It doesn't matter why they're sold. It matters how they're used.

I saw Syd's map, it's a good map, but it still doesn't address the fact that non-hunting style guns are used to kill others. Violence may have decreased and that's great. So why not try to decrease it some more?

Also, if a lot of that violence is from drug pushers and what not, why not make it harder for them to get guns?

I think you failed to see the point neodude posted though regarding this.

A lot more of our population is urban, a bunch of people crammed into a small area = higher crime rates.
I am all for this, but its a lot easier said then done, why not make it harder for them to get drugs, then would there be any violence?

Want to ban guns here? Fine, just as soon as we find a way to effectively ban criminals.

Which is another great reason to ban a lot of guns.

Because if you decrease violence one certain way, suddenly reversing your tactic will NOT decrease it more... If 3+1=4, then 3-1=/=5

I no longer have the bookmarks, I was on a different computer, a long time ago, on a forum far far away.... but when I was converted from your side, when I was 13, I was provided with several links about a town (maybe more, not sure) where there where laws in place requiring citizens of normal health, physically and mentally, to own firearms, in an effort to combat crime. Their crime ended, like that.... You won't grab yo strap and start bustin' if it's not just gangbangers with guns. More handguns fight handgun crime, because you'll get SHOT for shooting at someone.

*edit* Also, handguns are effective for self defense. In the hands of the average untrained criminal, they are VERY poor for offensive use. This is why gang violence is often so spectacular, yet innefective, with dozens, or more, rounds fired... and a few, or no, hits....

I think getting rid of cities would be more effective.

Most of the guns used in cities are bought throught the black market illegally. Gun prohibition would lead to a large black market = more crime.

Because then we'd be without ours and would come looking for them with guns...

    That's a good point.

Yea but then you just get a wild wild west mentality, which brings me back to John Wayne...

    I'm kidding

But seriously that just creates a really standoffish wild west type of town. As soon as someone starts firing, everyone starts firing.

More crime with illegal guns, AND more ruthless crime to protect a lucrative business. War on drugs v2.0.

The BBC actually did an article the other day on why America's gun laws won't change, and the overall love affair Americans have with guns.

Dohhh! well to be fair, i think the drugs i buy have very little to do with drug trade violence. Maybe weed, but i could always grow it myself...;) I don't LSD chemists are going around shooting their competition

:2thumbsup: I've been trying to make it but it always got lost in the 20 other posts posted at the same exact second...

Nothing should be banned, but it probably wouldn't hurt if it weren't so easy for everyone to obtain a gun. There should be mandatory classes on how to safely handle and use them. Some people are real dumb like

Not if everyone's properly trained, and in a healthy frame of mind to own their guns, because this can be much more easily regulated if you control the supply, but are not unjust with it. Just like how it's easier for almost everyone in high school to get marijuana than alcohol or cigarettes. If it's illegal for everyone, anyone can buy it, if it's legal for everyone who should have the right to own it, few will risk their ass to sell it to people who shouldn't have it, when it's not even a lucrative business.

I suppose I didn't see it earlier due to the 4 to 1 poster ratio.
