I had a chance to rent a place in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains here in SoCal. I forget what the heck I was doing in that part of LA... I think that's when I was at the online university and I could live anywhere. The thinking was that there were going to be more work opportunities the closer I was to Downtown Los Angeles. So anyway this place was way out in the sticks! It was a nice lofty studio, but it was sure out of the way. I would have been driving quite awhile just to get down off the mountain to get to the 101, or to the PCH. This place was close to right between the two freeways with about 15 minutes of driving to either one.

I don't think it's a bad idea, but be prepared to drive lots more to do even the simplest of things. It sounds like it's just a little bit out of the way, and you might want to find someplace a little bit closer to town.

who needs nightlife if you have a house on the beach in hawaii with a pool and hot tub? if you get lonely, just have your friends come to you; i'd rather visit that house than go to a bar any day.

$700 here gets you a room in a house full of crackheads

id say check it out and if you like it make a deal to stay a night or 2 before signing on for any commitment

give yourself a few days to decide

$700 would be pretty expensive here. all my bills combined are probably around $600, and i'm in a pretty average apartment in a decent, middle class neighborhood.

You can rent a decent house here for about $500. Not sure what cheap places cost. Not too many apartments around here.

$700 here will get you a mediocre 1 bedroom apt or a crappy 2 bedroom. Occasionally you can find a house in the $600 - $700 range, but very rarely and probably because the owners don't realize what a gold mine the rental market is. I pay $850 for a 3 bedroom house because I 'm renting from family and basically just took over their mortgage payments but other houses in the area are usually over $1000 at least . Condos downtown rent for around $2000 like we're in fucking NYC or something, it is ridiculous

So I'm still interested in living there for a one year lease, and in the process of trying to acquire it. I'm waiting for the land owner to send over the terms and conditions for me to read over. I've decided the long drives into town won't be a big deal to me. The big disadvantage is the internet will be slow and unreliable out there. None of the neighbors on that road have efficient internet. Slow internet drives me crazy and I rely on internet for my work.

Sorry I don't understand the question.

Fucking take it you mad man. Of course you should take it. Unless it doesn't have broadband, in which case that changes everything.

Oh I see... i've grown up in LA and OC my whole life.. I did live just above LA for a bit. it ws really nice and way less crowded. Still expensive though. idk if i could ever move away from this area but i may eventually have to.

    why?

i like moving around. if i stay in the same city for too long, i start to get discontent and need to do something to change things up. but then, i've never lived somewhere with as much going on as LA.

Bad news. I got a text from the landlord today saying she decided she is not yet ready to rent out her stone house at this time. After lots of consideration and seeing the insight from this thread and other people I sought advice from, I decided I really wanted the cottage after all, even with the finicky internet that runs slow. Bummer.

Sorry to hear that but perhaps you can take some comfort knowing what you may have missed out on....
