should self-defense classes really be open to EVERYBODY ???

It's been my experience that most woman are more relieved than anything else.

Ya, thats kinda true about lots of chicks.

 

at a minimum they would have to be checked against police reocrds. furthermore they would have to bring a statement from school that they have never been violent. and the parents would have to state why they want to participate in the first place - are they threatended by anyone ?

 

Well, we have had several school shootings over here by people who were never violent before and had no police records, so that really wouldn't mean anything.
The scary people are the quiet ones...they could go off any second.

 

GLM......I have a very close friend that is an instructor at Tai Kwan Do...and it is taught AS self defense , not to be used to go out and hurt someone , but to ward off an attack. He stresses this to the young people he is teaching , and its not just how to classes...he also teaches the spritual aspect as well...how the mind and body combine to give one strength and endurance. I dont know of any martial arts classes that promote going out and attacking people.

 

What about Tai Chi? Those dudes are always picking fights with everybody.

oh yes, it would ! the fact that one will never be able to detect ALL people that might ever be harmfull shouldnt prevent searching for people with an OBVIOUS violent history !

 

I appreciate that your friend at least tries to prevent any misuse of what he is teaching. giving the right kind of people this is probably even successfull.

but say, you start handing out AK-47s for free in the bronx, instruct people on their usage and simultaneously tell them they are only allowed to use them when attacked. to you seriously believe they would listen ? what they would listen to would be the instructions on how to use them, and nothing else !

 

again, self defence classes are not comparable to ak47s

 

Of course you will have people taking self defense courses only to use them to be bullies , but that doesnt mean that the courses should be done away with because of those random few. Some people go into them not just for the defense course itself but for the spiritual aspect as well , and NONE of them would abuse what they learn.
Who knows , maybe some day someone that took such a course might just have to protect YOU GLM from some random act of violence

Theres so much wrong with this.

A. Kung Fu is a Chinese (Mandarin) term.

B. Kung Fu just means something someone is skilled at. A good chef has good kung fu.

C. Martial arts were not invented in China.

D. A martial art is an art of war. War was used for many purposes, and very little of it was honarable. Much of the honor codes from marriors came from times without war, when warrior classes were bored. Bushido frfom the shogunate period in Japan. Kn ight fealty from after the crusades.

E. Scum of society? A woman wanting to learn to defend herself is scum?

F: A martial art dfoesn't transform someone into a slayer of men. Unless you're Jet Li, you're still going to be just another person, with a few skills. You're not going to hit people more often because you know a martial art.

G. Psychological maturity is usually the determining factor in abuse. People look for targets they assume are weaker to assult, and this is usually in relationships. having a woman being able to defend herself and maybe develop a little more secuerity isn't a bad thing.

H. Why are you so terrified with women?

I. Is having the government hold your hand against potential knowledge eally a good thing? What about weight lifting? You don't want really strong people walking around do you?

J. This one of the more pathetic things ever.

 

And as I pointed out earlier, a lot of the martial artists I know started out wanting to learn martial arts to be a bad ass. A few of them I know are now world class IKSA and K1 fighters. If they had been restricted fgor being punk kids at the time, they would have never advanced.

I used to be a punk back in the day. I know it seems unbelivable.

 

ok, great, but how many people have they BEATEN UP in the process of becoming world class fighters ?!!!
