Good question. What is the government? Is it the one in Washington, or the one in my state capital, or perhaps the network of lobbyists and corporations that influence all of the above? Or is it the people who vote for the politicians and are customers of the corporations that influence them? The word "government" comes from a Greek root meaning "to steer." I do often worry about the direction in which I see the US steering, and some of the people at some of the wheels do happen to work for institutions which at least call themselves "governments." However, what I fear more is the very fact that today--in the twenty-first century, by the Gregorian calendar to which I'm accustomed--there's always something new we're supposed to fear. There's always someone willing to go to great lengths--even causing death--to deliver messages of fear. If anything kills humanity, I think fear will do it, unless we kill it first. Rather than focusing on fearing "the government," which as I indicated seems kind of an ambiguous concept to me these days, I prefer to focus on things that I think can help people to steer their own lives more independently. Things like 3D printing, the Open Source Ecology movement, direct democracy as was done in Iceland...All of these and more will, I think, make traditional notions of government obsolete at some point, hopefully at least starting in my lifetime.
They're corrupt and potentially dangerous. A threat to our freedom and privacy but I don't outright fear them, I just don't trust the government and all the big people on top.
