Mmm ska. Ska is my thing. =] Some of my fav bands include the mighty mighty bosstones, the toasters, madness, the specials, the selector, the special AKA, prince buster, laurel aitken, hepcat, the slackers, and the skatalites. Can't forget your roots. Mustard plug is from right around here, grand rapids michigan. I'm also going to see streetlight manifesto on jan 11th. However, 1st wave and 2 tone is where it's at with ska. 3rd wave is fun, but you cant beat your roots.
haha, suburban legands are so crazy, they are like funky with horns and crap. The best ska is roots, and 2 tone and such. 3rd wave bands can get so old. However MU330, bosstones, skankin pickle, pietasters, toasters, hepcat, slackers, BIG D and things like that, are great. But sometimes it just gets to "poppy"
I'm not a big fan of 3rd wave bands, or much of anything that is marketed to the Hot Topic crowd. I'm a 2-tone man myself....actually, you people are the first I've ever met that have felt the same way, other than my dad's wacky skinhead friend. Specials and Specials AKA, Selecter, Madness, the only one I haven't heard so far is THE BODYSNATCHERS, even though they only did one EP, those chicks could play some fucking SKA. Fishbone and Sublime and The Clash all had some good ska songs but I wouldn't consider them ska bands...not that it really matters. Finally, my favorite ska band in the whole world is... Oi-Skall Mates, they're from Japan. Look them up on youtube, they are incredibly talented. If you want their albums you gotta buy japanese itunes cards though.
Haha, yeah 2-tone is the way to go. 2-tone and the revival bands and such. I like 3rd wave, it just dosnt appeal to me as much as 1st-2nd wave. However I do support my favorite local bands.
Really you kinda find one band then find others through them. The specials, the selector, the special aka, madness, the english beat, the bodysnatchers, judge dread, the skatalites, the toasters, hepcat, the slackers, laurel aitken, desmond dekker, fishbone, the aggrolites, various things like that. Then theres things like Mustard plug, Big D and the kids table, the mad caddies, the pietasters, skankin pickle, MU330, reel big fish, streetlight manifesto, bandits of the acoustic revolution, catch 22, and such. That should get you started. Some sites to check out for ska...www.turnuptheska.com www.skasummit.com www.skaspot.com Yeah, I'm obscessed and adicted.
