Actually Katrina is far worse than a tsunami becouse of the black eye it left on the american goverment . How can the richest country in the world leave a few thousand people to die with out water and food right in its own soil . there well be no flag waving this time around but total shame . is pure disgusting.

well, i tell you what...the next time one of these comes around, you bet the government is going to be doing a better job of evacuating the area. they're gonna take that shit more seriously. bring in transportation for those who don't have it, like the inner city poor. though NO has always been pretty notorious for it's high crime rate, many people probably were't going to leave just so they could protect what precious little they had. but southerners are also notorious for thinking they can "ride this one out." i know, i've ridden out 2, my mother several more than that, and the last one had my mom deciding that her 3 kids were worth more than my dad's ego.

You mean Hugo, Ivan, Camille, et.al. weren't enough of a wake-up call? There is always going to be a next time and we aren't going to be prepared. Because some one else will have an agenda that's so much more important than doing what needs to be done. And the "Oh, yeah! Well, don't you remember _____?" sayers will be shut down or spun out by the machine du jour, money to do what needs to be done will find its way to something else according to the priorities of the reigning agenda, and it will happen again.

We don't practice stupidity so much as we embrace hubris.

They did the same thing during Hurricane andrew but the cuban comunity acted fast and sent water and food and ice to homestead . way before any goverment help "weeks!" and months. The Moral to the storie is do not rely on big brother . have food stored . keep a gun for your protection against the desperate hoards .

no, i don't really think those were exactly the same. defintely spread out over a larger area. you can't force people to leave their homes, i guess, but i wouldn't call their behavior hubris.

well here you go...in case you are still having a hard time...i am sure that you have heard of moveon.....well they have set up a housing site....

    them kids rock!!!
MoveOn.org Civic Action, which set upHurricaneHousing.org on Thursday, said its Web site listed offers for 50,950 beds on Friday afternoon, and the number was climbing by more than 1,000 per hour.

    Dear MoveOn member,

Hurricane Katrina's toll on communities, homes and lives has devastated the nation. Now victims must face the daunting question of where to go next—and we can help.

Tens of thousands of newly homeless families are being bused to a stadium in Houston, where they may wait for weeks or months. At least 80,000 are competing for area shelters, and countless more are in motels, cars, or wherever they can stay out of the elements. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross are scrambling to find shelter for the displaced.

This morning, we've launched an emergency national housing drive to connect your empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to wait out the storm. You can post your offer of housing (a spare room, extra bed, even a decent couch) and search for available housing online at:

    http://www.hurricanehousing.org

Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance (about 300 miles) of the affected areas in the Southeast, especially New Orleans.

Please forward this message to anyone you know in the region who might be able to help.

But no matter where you live, your housing could still make a world of difference to a person or family in need, so please offer what you can.

    The process is simple:

You can sign up to become a host by posting a description of whatever housing you have available, along with contact information. You can change or remove your offer at any time.

Hurricane victims, local and national relief organizations, friends and relatives can search the site for housing. We'll do everything we can to get your offers where they are needed most. Many shelters actually already have Internet access, but folks without 'net access can still make use of the site through case workers and family members.

Hurricane victims or relief agencies will contact hosts and together decide if it's a good match and make the necessary travel arrangements. The host's address is not released until a particular match is agreed on.

If hosting doesn't work for you, please consider donating to the Red Cross to help with the enormous tasks of rescue and recovery. You can give online at:

    http://www.moveon.org/r?r=859

As progressives, we share a core belief that we are all in this together, and today is an important chance to put that idea to work. There are thousands of families who have just lost everything and need a place to stay dry. Let's do what we can to help.

    http://www.hurricanehousing.org

Thanks for being there when it matters most.

ridin round all the time n listening to all the political bullshit already about this makes me ill .. so the govt fucks up yet again in lotsa folkses eyes,,,, same shit just a different day to many,,,, and the govt says ya gotta look at it in all different ways,,, feasibility , not wasting energy on things n then have to do it all over again not only cost wise but labor hours wise and how big a toll it takes on ppl moving n moving n moving... this whole thing is far worse live and in person than most of us can ever imagine ,,, n pictures on the tv or online still dont show it all,,,, we, know then ature of some humans where they just cant control some of the more animalistic behaviours they have n add lack of sleep desperation, sadness, worry ,fright, hunger and even injuries n makes for a bigger fiasco,,,,,

either way tis neither here nor there n we have to keep dealing with it,,, it aint going a way ,,, so sure lets keep playing the blame game n seperating this country a bit more,,,, rather than come together work on it n make things better the next go round,,, remember govt is made up of a mix of humans n no matter who the fuck you are dont matter in the brain intelligence game,,,we can only be som smart...

i know...i hate the finger pointing...we were just discussing this, kc and i in another forum....finger pointing doesnt do anything...
yes our govt sucks and didnt respond when it should but lets jsut use our energy now that the relief has arrived, lets use our energy to promote peace instead of being pissed of what was....
we can only change this moment...and each of us reading the thread, responding in hate and discontent and anger and disbelief...have but this very moment....to promote love and hope and well wishes and prayers and good vibes and light....
the world is still so beautiful...we do create our own reality...with ourselves and with all in the land....
    healing not blaming.....

yay for help there...yay for the help i can offer...yay for all those touched by this tragedy in a way that will allow them to see life in a different way....yay for all those that will survive....
not that we cant be touched in a saddening or angry way...of course we are all touched that way....what we do with it and how we handle it is ours though:)

It's not other countries responsibility-it's ours. We help others because they're poorer and less developed than us. We're the best off we need to help ourselves and not be afraid of our own people. We need a black president to finally end racism and close the gap.

Depending on what you feel makes a country the best off. We have the world's most powerful military. That to me equates to being the biggest kid in school. Sure everyone is scared of him, but almost everyone would love to see him get taken down a notch or two.
