As a horse lover (and owner of 20 of them) I see why people are reluctant to eat them. However, although I love them.. if people want to eat them, they're going to. What gets me is the utterly disgusting ways in which they are treated, traveled and killed. Many are abused and traveled thousands of miles before slaughter.. many also die from the journey. Lots of horse meat eaten in Europe comes from Mexico.. the killing methods there are barbaric to say the least, it brings a tear to my eye thinking about it. This needs improvement! As for bute- I have consumed some (accidentally) myself. (Administering to horse, got on fingers...fingers in mouth. Not nice..but done no harm so far?) But as the existence of bute caused the EU to tighten the law on horse passports it must be pretty bad..I'm obviously just too hardcore for it Lots of horses killed are also from Ireland. Here many passports are forged and horses who have been stamped not for human consumption end up on the food chain. To be honest I can see that in the future bute will be banned, yet no action will be taken to improve the vile standards of slaughter.
its hard to regulate what isnt done in your country. american horses are shipped to mexico for slaughter because the laws make it impractical to do it here. people got in a tizzy, and now the horses suffer more. we really have no good way to deal with old or sick or maimed horses on US soil. people get their emotions worked up, and then cant see the forest for the trees.
Thing that worries me is, if they don't know if it's horse or beef? Then basically they don't know what's it is! Any processed meat could be or have anything in it yuck! I hardly ever eat meat, I think it might be time to give up totally...
Couldnt agree with you more, i've actually written to MEP's with regard to banning transporting livestock, it is barbaric and totally unethical and panders to the ritual slaughter market. Animals should be slaughtered locally and shipped out in freezer lorries.
