Nick, I hadn't seen Minnie and Moskowitz until I heard you talking about it. I became curious and checked it out. I saw it and realized it's an amazing movie.
absolutely. they don't even sell his stuff on Amazon, unless you want to buy a big collection of a few of his films for $70 or something. here's a few random scraps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIqSqbNuMTA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPqY0FWthHE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPFKA8olLS0
I'm glad you liked it. it's good to know some people are receptive to what I suggest. for all my joking about good taste and whatnot, when I namedrop shit it's because I truly want to share things with people that they may not have heard of otherwise.
I have bookmarked them and will check them out when my internet provider stops fucking with our bandwith. I can't wait, I love finding out about exciting things that nobody else knows about. Its like discovering magical secret doorways to other worlds.
check out Godard too, if you're not already hip to his stuff. I like his work easily as much as Cassavetes'. I'd mention Lynch too but anyone with more than a passing interest in cinema knows Lynch.
Yeah, I like lynch a lot, particularly Blue Velvet and Dune. Eraserhead (Brilliant, memorable, extraordinary, but I will never watch it again) and Mulholland drive, not so much. I can remember a conversation I had just out of high school with a cousin of mine where we were poking fun at the 'hardcore' David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick fans.
How can you not like Shawshank redemption? As for might ducks, that's just a child hood favourite me and my dad use to love.
It has a wonderful message. Its entertaining. The characters are compelling. But...the message is oversimplified and dumbed down. Its not realistic. Its not subtle. It pulls your strings a bit too much.
that would be me (about hardcore Lynch fans). my favorite Lynch film is Mullholland Drive, and in all honesty I thought Inland Empire was terrific. I liked the open-endedness and ambiguity of them. and Twin Peaks is my favorite show ever.
that's how I feel. if it were on TV I would watch it and enjoy it, but yes, it is too safe and sentimental for me to rate it too highly.
not to mention Shawshank is pseudo racist via yet another Magical Black Man plot device, which Stephen King excels at.
I really want to see twin peaks especially after reading about it in a book about the history of modern art I have...which is awesome by the way and written by an Australian. Its called "The culture club" and draws connections between alternative or just plain pop culture (David Lynch, Saturday night live, the pixies etc. etc.) and art movements like fluxus, surrealism, existentialism etc. Its ok to be a lynch fan, but I think you should like a lot of other directors as well and not be a super elitist nerd about it.
I have my guilty pleasures and if you want to bag Star Wars for sheer crap value, Studio Ghibli films because you are just not interested and Anchorman because its stupid, then go ahead, but for the most part I thought my list was quite tasteful.
