I use a toothpick or one of those bamboo shish-kabob sticks.

 

I dont think they use toxic paint since you smoke out of it.

 

ops, i didn't mean the paint. i was a little baked when i wrote that.

 

If you're smoking a bowl covered in paint, scratching it would be the least of my worries. Glass pieces are just colored glass, no paint involved. Metal and wooden pieces might be different, but should never have painted bowls. If you see a painted bowl kids, cover your ears and run away.

 

I use a bottle rocket to scrape my bong stem. Works better than anything i've ever used. Makes it completely clean.
