Likely becuase in general they don't have to try very hard to find people, so they have little need to be on sites like IC.org unless they are still at the pen and paper stage. If that's the area you want, then go travelling and find them.
Wish I could, it would be a bit tricky lacking a vehicle as I do and so forth. I just hafta keep digging on Ic, find some other directories etc. However I did find some that showed a bit of promise after the post, persistence is a pain in the ass but it pay's.
Well, you can start googling combinations of the words commune, community, co-housing with places in the area you are looking for to find the ones that have websites up. Use modifiers to your search to exclude things like 1c.or and f.i.c like this; commune "northern california" -ic.org -f.i.c
I hate to admit it, but after having found ic.org in 07' I never stopped to consider google as a source. Just figured it would be a nice one stop shopping sort of site, but I've found otherwise I guess. And nothing against the places on IC, but most seem to have some sort of defined spiritual angle associated not to mention a good number of them are anti-tobacco & alcohol use, and while I'm not a heavy drinker by any means, I do enjoy a good bottle of scotch now and then, but of course I can certainly understand their reasoning considering the potential for conflict with a raging alcoholic. I do have one point of frustration with some of the places listed as they are more of a resort / retreat type business than an IC by "traditional definitions". Heck, maybe I should list the Hostel on there and we can make enough cash to where I might actually start getting paid,,,
Actually, if you have the location for it a 'resort/retreat' type business could be one hell of an income generator. Think what it would be like to offer up strawbale, earthship, cob etc cabin rentals combined with an all organic and local restaurant. Not only could you make money for the property, but think of the opportunity in terms of spreading those type of non-conventional ideas about. It's much easier to convince someone to rent a cabin for the week then to build a home. Once they've stayed in one for a week though and see that when done right they are a better option, they would be more likely to consider it as a building choice for themselves if they go to build a home in the future. The overhead would be very little compared to conventional cabin rental places, and you would be providing self employment for any permanent members, either through customer service, maintenance or supply. That was actually going to be the heart of what we were going to do when we had still thought we had a deal on a property with three lakes.
Well I'm certainly not saying its a bad plan by any means, I've been prodding the owner here with similar ideas using some of the abundant local clay and She's shown some degree of interest, however She then gets talked out of them by narrow visioned Luddites who've never heard of terra preta or waffle gardening and therefore cant seem to envision how one could grow crops in the desert,,, the Anasazi did it even without the terra preta, but perhaps they weren't trying to grow cops in a natural salt lick? Just getting frustrating for me here is all, so dont mind me too much if I get progressively ranty in the day's and weeks ahead. But imho a verbose ad for one's resort facilities would be more appropriately placed n a travel magazine or a tourism website, not so much on a directory of ic's where one would be looking for a home amongst like minds. I dont know, maybe they were open to more permanent residents but it didn't sound like it from their ad.
lol, I agree that they shouldn't be using it as a place to advertise their resort. If they do have a community set up there, thats what the focus should be on. As for the owner where you are, stop trying to convince her by telling her why. Show her. You can make small batch's of terra preta with nothing more then an old tin canister and a campfire. Make up enough to treat half of a 2' x 4' garden bed. It won't take long for her to realize you aren't as crazy as you look
I'm already on that, been doing all my cooking on mesquite wood for the past couple weeks and saving all the coals, slaking the snot (and ash of course) out of them once done. It's not perfect, ash-free char but the negative offset from the potash will fade in time and I do have about 40 or so cu ft of lawn clippings and leaves waiting for a cover and some moisture so the composting can begin. But there are other frustrations here as well which have me wanting to move on, the garden is the least of them. She's a cool Lady to know and all, but She has some f'd up philosophies in my book, it's mainly the contradictory / hypocritical ones having me thinking of growing my hair long so I'll have some to pull out when she starts driving me nuts. I really try not to vent online about it though. She hates the rocks and cacti, native american culture, hippies, pot smokers, nudists, those who in her view have "loose morales" or are otherwise not prudish or ashamed to be seen walking around shirtless. And her favorite phrase is "People suck" which she frequently informs the Guests of,,, who just so happen to often be People,,, go figure... So naturally She starts a business in the Desert with all the Cacti in an area that is rich in Native American artifacts and cultural attractions, is often visited by Crunchy-Granola types and old Hippies or European travellers who are of course far more Puritanical than the most Zealous of the midwestern bible beaters from where she's from ( ), in a town where there are 3 hot springs that are nude-mandatory... Can ya' feel my pain a lil' Bro? It's like she's set herself up a perfect utopia where she'll be sure to never run out of shit to complain about,,, :banghead: Almost wish I'd have stayed in St. Louis,,, but I do really love the area out here and 99% of our Guest's are awesome. I just need to find me an elsewhere, or take a day or two off now and then to go hiking & rock hunting and clear my head.
Thats not funny Man,,, But it usually only happens when I've been messing with Datura so I write it off most of the time.
