Huntington mayor apologizes to Marine on behalf of city
In a letter, he expresses sadness that a member of the city's adopted unit was spat on during a car wash.

HUNTINGTON BEACH – Mayor Dave Sullivan has written a personal letter of apology to a Marine from the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines regiment who was spat on by someone in a passing car while participating in a fundraising car wash.

"I want to express our sadness and disgust that you had to suffer the horrendous indignity of being spat on in our city," Sullivan said in his letter about the Sept. 23 incident. "No one deserves this, but especially not you who has given so much for this country."

Huntington Beach has adopted the "3/1 Marines" from Camp Pendleton, which means residents raise funds to help the Marines and their families.

Officials from Camp Pendleton would not comment on the incident, and the name of the Marine is still unknown.

The car wash at Pacific Coast Highway and Warner Avenue was sponsored by the Marines, who wore their uniforms and held signs. Some people stopped just to hand out donations.

One driver, though, slowed down, rolled down his window and spat on one of the Marines, witnesses said. The driver has not been identified, but was described as being in his 30s.

After chastising the "cowardly act" at an Oct. 2 City Council meeting, Sullivan came close to tears several times during an impromptu speech.

"Everyone was universally enraged," the mayor said after the meeting. "Even the people who are against the war."

The Marines raised about $6,500 from the car wash, officials said. The money will go for an upcoming Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

Councilman Gil Coerper said he plans to deliver Sullivan's letter once the Marine is identified.

 

I really wish these people would come forward. The pregnant "hippiechick" and her friends could make millions with books and movie deals. They could even open up a school so the new generation of spitters can get trained.

First of all the story about the passed note was proven to be total Bull Shit. Lets start there.

If you despise Jane then despise everyone that marched. There is no middle ground.

I think everyone has the right to give an opinion no matter what their age without being called a fool. Seems to me a lot of folks my age have turned into the parents we rebelled against.

 

Fonda succesfully helped curtael the bombing that lead to nixon pulling out,bringing all their sorry asses home to safety and yet they still bitch.

If tha soldiers are to spineless to stand up for the people or at the least their own military code of ethics then blame them too. Ali refused to kill innocent women and children and many U.S. soldiers are doing that today in this iraq war.

 

Who didnt have a choice to fight in nam? From what is documented people did have a choice and many soldiers deserted the military.

 

With all due respect sir but if you were in vietnam havent you heard of the My Lai Massacre were women and children and elders were murdered on purpose? Have you not heard of the four U.S. service men on trial right now for raping a 14 year old iraqi girl and murdering her sister and both of her parents?

 

Why do people think if your drafted you dont have a choice? If they reinstitute the draft I guess the people claiming soldiers didnt have a choice wont have one either.... at least in their own minds. I dont care what the government orders if its wrong Im not gonna do it period.

You guys gotta do your hip history cuz being hippy is being anti-military. Its really simple hasnt it always been? I mean both my grandfathers were in the military but I dont think they did a service for the people of their country of course not , they were the victims and they'll tell you this. The government still has not provided the proper assistance these vets need. You tell my relative with disabilities he has suffered from agent orange or something if he would have rather gone to jail or war and you will see that some soldiers regret going.

 

The nazis were ordered and drafted too so does that mean their soldiers are blameless for war crimes?

 

Those who committed war crimes should have been held accountable. Many were, though they were "just following orders". Those who did not should not.
