Sports are just like any other skill. I don't think there's anything wrong with self improvement and trying to achieve excellence as long as it's not taken too seriously at the end of the day. It's meant to be fun.

hippies don't like sports and jocks. i went to a hippie college for a bit and was really surprised by the social dynamic in that the schools' athletes weren't "cool" at all. prob some past bully resentment or something, i dunno

 

I love sports, love watching and playing them. I'm pretty naturally athletic so I've always picked up most sports rather easily. I definitely enjoy putting my athleticism and competitiveness to the test.

 

Basketball was my all time favorite when I was young enough to play. And I pitched fast pitch softball--it's so much faster than baseball. I loved playing --always wanted to be good at track,but wasn't. I always felt bad for the kids that were chosen last when choosing up to play, so I tried to pick some of the least talented players. Didn't matter much,cuz I did all the shooting anyway! Last B-ball game I played in city league was against some guys that were on the college team---I had 38 points and fouled out in the third quarter. Played center at 6'2"&1/2. Ah--those were the days for this old man.

 

To answer the question OP posed I think people are negative toward sports due to the jock stereotype. While that stereotype proves to be true sometimes, maybe even often times, it's definitely not an all encompassing truth. Either that or they just aren't athletic so they dislike playing them.

 

So do I the thrill of slam-dunking the basketball over a guy who is taller than I am is the shit
