I opted out to live in a remote community 2 years ago. However before, I always lived in a house with a garden so that I could grow food - even in town. I live in a 200 year old cottage which has front and back gardens. I grow most of my own food or pick stuff from the wild. What I don't grow or gather I get from a farmers market that happens in the nearest town once a month. The nearest department store is 4 hours away!! I learned a lot from my mother and grandmother about preserving food, baking too.

Big out door space here complete with standing stones and circles and we have a law here called the Freedom to Roam. So the meadow is free. We are 1/2 mile from the beach.

Transport wise, I use the bus service which is very limited and my bike with my youngest boy in a seat on the back. He is getting too big for the seat and the road is too dangerous for him to be on his bike so a friend is going to build me a 'trailer' for him from recycled bike parts. You will find lots of like minds when you jump in.

I looked for a place like this for years and yes it did require a certain amount of courage to drop the old career, go back to college and study and then look for the perfect spot.

If you ask the universe will provide...
