Contrary to popular belief on this site, most military soldiers are good people. There are always bad apples, but the majoirty of them, quite a few in my family, are good people.

The vast difference between someone getting convicted for following illegal orders and somone refusing to follow them is the resulting action. With cases like Calley, Griffen, and England they followed the orders and the evidence was the result. Where's the examples of military people who have refused orders and found to be right? Where's the convicted c.o.'s who issued these orders that were never carried out? Do you have any idea how hard it would be to prove that someone ordered you to do something illegal? Disobeying a direct order, insubordination, mutiny, etc.. all come into the picture before it's even considered that the soldier was in the right. What if they are in a unit where everyone knows it's wrong but they're all agreeing except for him? Do you honestly think that they'll back him? C'mon. What's on paper and what happens in real life can be two very different things.

To the poster who made the statement about many thinking ill of the military members, I can only speak for myself but I'm not that way. I can't stand that blanket stereotype as much as I can stand other blankets. I know someone personally who spent a career in the Air Force, communications , never touched a gun and to boot helped in pioneering earth to space communications. That's pretty cool.
