I have a friend who is American but of Algerian descent...

On forms and tests and stuff, they don't allow her to say she's African American... she has to put white/caucasian (as all Arabs do... but she is Berber most likely).

    This political correctness is frustrating.

Also, I'm of Pakistani descent... and I have to put Asian/Pacific Islander on forms... even though East Asian and South Asian are completely different races. In practical use, everyone's like "you're not Asian" but applications tell me otherwise.

In just about every professional documentation in the US Asian= East AND South Asian. Once in a while, they'll separate it.

For comparing purposes, esp education, both groups do show basically the same trends. (except in the interracial marriage scene)

I don't mind it. I just wish I could call myself Asian everywhere without people going "jigga what, but your eyes?!"

I think the term "African American" is kind of dumb anyway.

to be politically correct is one thing, but if you want to be absolutely correct then...

the truth is that we are all african. africa is our true homeland. we branched out all over the world from africa.

so, yeah, we are all african apes. :p q:... im proud of that.

the "he said, she said" bullshit is for the birds.

rambleON, don't you think this person is just playing with words...and making a mockery out of the whole thing.
If this guy IS serious, he needs to get himself a life.

You, odon. i find it refreshing that people might challenge political correctness of terms. (I'm a logophile... lover of words, so that's namely why).

Why do you think it's mockery or loserlike?

    No hate, just wondering.

It isn't bashing political correctness, imo. It seems like some kind of posturing. If he chose to use such a collection of words, he also must realise "African American" means something.
He is NOT part of that.
If he was claiming to be white "African-American.'' - then the guy is a jackass. Even if he was being pedantic, and not actually refering himself as white "African-American.'' Then he can't be so dense as to not realise putting those three words together is foolish. He should have thought about it for a split second. Then thought the BS that followed was not worth it.

If he was so proud - why not just refer himself as African-American ?

    interesting. it is a paradox.

the term AA itself has a lot of controversy surrounding it.

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=african+american

browse that and it gives a feel for it in practical terms.
    Also,
a number of blacks in the US say that African American refers to those brought here as slaves and don't know their exact heritage.

one entry brought up another interesting point: what about the term american itself? why does a white american have to just say "american" and people will know it? why does a black have to be African American?

considering it goes by the majority rule... and the majority of "african americans" are black... wouldn't white african american seem to follow?

I'm not trying to take sides. I definitely see the point. But his logic does not totally have to be non sequitur.

I'm not sure how it would've been received if he pushed for African American.

Going by personal observation... there have been instances where a non-black person pulled for African-American for admittance to an education program called CSTEP and had a lot of trouble for it. It was namely for the benefits of the group this person applied.
