On topic: I don't see how someones skin colour affects their nationality. The kid was african american. The kid was white. Problem stems from where?

My point is..."African-American" has a long history and hasn't really had many people of white (apparently) extraction using it. Infact I can't think of any. If he was so proud of coming from Africa...then he is should just refer to himself as African...hell, White-African if he is that way inclined.
It is just attaching white to African-American...that just doesn't seem right. Infact it is the stu..no that wasn't the stupidist thing I heard this week, but it was close.

"African American" does not have a long history to it. It merely replaced "******" together with the civil rights movement as others have stated.

The student did not attach "white" to "African American". He said he was white, African, and American. It might not be the most educated thing to say, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. People just enjoy getting offended, it's as simply as that. People will jump at any chance to get offended, especially dumb and/or insecure people. This would be a non-issue in any country other than America, where political correctness rules the idiot masses.

I'm not really offended. I just don't like people throwing it around when they post a reply to ME. I've heard your logic regarding this and in a way it would be nice if it was true, but it isn't. I'm assuming you wouldn't actually call somebody that in a hurtful way...why is that? Think about it.
