I used to raise Sonoma Setters which ran up around 125-150 lbs average. What I saw as a common problem was folk who would get a "cute puppy" and fail to grow apace with the 'puppy' in maturity.

btw; if you can't train dogs forget trying to herd cats! lol

Some of these dogs have their owners trained. The dogs tease the owners about three times each day by purposely running away from the owner and getting enjoyment seeing the owners come looking for them around the neighborhood and screaming their name. It's similar to little kids who know how to get their way with their parents who don't know how to raise them.

Un-training the dog owners is the first step. Changing people's attitudes is more difficult than training dogs.

Yep that is pretty idiotic. So I suppose they were warned, correct? Not to criticize you but calling the cops is a bit overkill. Go to their door and ask they get their dogs. Either way, thank goodness you, your daughter, and dog are ok. The story often ends much worse.

My own daughter was attacked by a neighbor dog. It was a dog we didn't even know existed and it escaped while the family was putting up their halloween decorations. It was part chow, part shepherd. My daughter had gone over to a neighbors door, and the door charged her. She went to the ground, rolled up, and the dog bit her in on the shoulder, arm, and armpit. She had teeth scraps, and one break through the skin. She came home screaming and I ran out to find the dog, which i did right away, and the owners. We had a talk in the street, and I took daughter to the Dr and they went on record with the incident, and animal control was called. They had the dog quaranteed in the yard for a period to confirm there were no zoonotic diseases (rabies). The owners were sorry but would not admit to the full attack but only that their dog scared my daughter. Even with evidence of the bite, they made sure they never uttered the word "attack" or "bite". They even brought her a get well package with a card that said they were sorry their dog "scared" her. We never saw the dog again.

I suppose, but the police aren't dog handlers, and the dogs aren't criminals. Although they are a danger.

I called the police yesterday on someones annoying barking dog.. Its a little shit of a dog. the noise is carrying over 2 blocks.. I want to know what the hell is going on there.
Cops : you should call animal control sir,..
ME : NO!! you should investigate this human being that is allowing their dog to suffer outside like that,, Hangs up..

In a little time, it was quiet again..

When I was attacked by a dog teh cops come, but the people that owned the dog hid from the cops. They actually never came back to that residence in the day time .. And were never charged.

Neighbors with annoying dog. Took 5 yrs for animal control to do something. However the police had enough records of being there to charge them with cruelty. The police can do something, even if its nothing at all..

Chows and Akitas are the two breeds that I'm cautious around.

I never call the cops by the way. When my ex and I had a house, she had an outdoor cat. A dog came up and the cat ran up a tree.. dog jumped up and ripped the cat off the tree (ripped the cats claws off), and had the cat on the ground. I ran up and kicked that dog hard as fuck in the ribs. Needless to say it dropped the cat and ran off. I then told the owner that if he lets his dog run loose again and it comes on my property I'm shooting it.

I hate cats but I felt so bad for it. He was screaming and I could see blood spraying out of his claw area. He was fucked up for like 2 months from that.

Every time the dog owner walked by from that point, the dog was on a leash..

I mean no offense, but this is bullshit.

If I have a problem with a neighbor I'm going to approach them. Calling the law before even talking to them first is a bitch move in my opinion. Things can usually be settled without getting the law involved.

I was told by a friend that works at the Humane Society that in our state if a dog bites a person that it must be reported to the police. I had to go to the doctor and got a tetanus shot and if I had not reported to the police the doctor would have. The vet also asked if the attack was reported.

There's a law for everything now.

I've been bitten by dogs multiple times in my life and never called the cops or animal control. Everyone is so dependent on the authorities it's insane to me.

There was no going to their door.

We couldn't go out into our own yard without being attacked.

The police officer was viciously charged when he got there.

That's what my original post said.

After hours, when Animal Control is closed, in this county you call 911 for viscous dog attacks.

If the police officer needs animal control, he calls for them; which he would have done had the owners not been at home to put the dogs away.

Do you guys not understand that we could not go out into our own yard, let alone the dogs yard?

These dogs attacked in the dark, in our yard. We couldn't go outside until they were put away.

Are you calling me a bitch?

My husband and I are disabled and we have a small child that lives here.

    We're not superhero dog-fighters.

I'm not going to be trapped in my house by a neighbors viscous dogs.

I haven't read this entire thread, but I will say I agree with the title. 99% of the time it's the owner's fault. People don't assert the dominance, and actually take the time to train their dogs anymore.

No, sry I should have been more specific. I was talking about people calling the cops because of a barking dog, and the like. You did what you had to do, sometimes it's unavoidable.

So have I, and I agree. But not everyone is so well equipped to handle a situation like that as we are.

    Yea...
When I was 8 months pregnant and b.c of that had enough probs sleeping as it was, I had an upstairs neighbor who had gotten a yellow lab puppy.. oh and my neighbor worked 3rd shift n left the dog there at night.. this dog was not trained (very well, at least) and alllllll night... howling, barking, howling, barking... the dog knocking things over, running into walls??- I mean who knows what the dog was doing but it bothered me to the point that I actually switched around the living room and bedroom furniture so that way the dog (b.c of the way the house was set up, obviously.),would not be directly on top of me...
    yet I could still hear...
I called the neighbor. I was nice but I also explained I couldn't take not sleeping anymore.... and he apologized. promised to do something about it. and ... nothing? it continued. Maybe he tried to do soething and doesn't know how to train a puppy...idk, BUT, point is, I never even considered calling the cops.

(reading the part of the convo that I missed while typing this. it would take A LOT for me to call the cops..ive never done it so...?)
